Hub’s pretty glowing about the Bears’ draft in today’s DH. He thinks the DB was a steal. I would not have gone TE there simply because they already have a large collection of goo. I really wanted a guard or tackle. But Hub says Kmet was the top one in the draft, and he could be a good tight end for many years.

I was okay with what they did.

Should have picked Diggs. But Johnson probably drives an old Camry.

Yup, would have been happier with Diggs, hard to pass up SEC defensive players. Still a few interesting OT, QB, and WR guys, but most likely not there in 5th round. Roster is still paper thin at several positions with few picks left, making it highly likely that several UDFA make the roster and will be forced into action due to injuries to starters. Cannot see how Montgomery makes it through a full season with his running style, not even gonna get in to the QB position, those guys are gonna take a ton of hits with this offensive line.

It does.

But these two picks will also allow Pace to dump cap room next year if they play well.

Enjoy Kyle Fuller. He will be gone after this year.

Well, they already drafted Fuller's comp so that's taken care of. If he can stay on the field.

In those two vids, you can tell Kmet is definitely bigger than Kittle. Not sure what you're smokin' that you dont see that.

Kittle is way, way more physical and clearly way stronger and more explosive. If Kittle was a fifth round pick then Kmet should've gone undrafted.

I’m just done trading up. I’m happy to trade for a player like Mack but enough of trading up

I'm absolutely with you. Ryan Pace went from being a good GM to all-but-fired and I really do believe its because he expended his supply of mid-round picks for other ends.

I was simply wrong about the damage wrought by the (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky trade. It killed them, and then to not even get a good player. Its rough, I actually give Pace a pass on missing on quarterback because that's so hard to do...but I just cant jive with his grand strategy anymore. Individual busts like Shaheen, Mitch, Mike Davis, etc....that's one thing. But to just have a flawed methodology and misplaced priorities? Cant abide it.

Pace has never been a ‘good’ GM. He’s been mediocre at best, he’s in over his head every draft he’s been here for and makes moves like a guy who doesn’t have a plan.

I disagree. He makes moves like a guy who has identified several players that he likes and he has tunnel vision for the rest of the draft board. He had an entire day to adjust his vision but he refused to.

Pissed off Peoria Matt is one of my favorite annual draft bits.

Pace took a roster that had nothing and turned it around in a major way. He definitely had a good start but these past two off-seasons have been horrible, just absolutely bad.

I do also and feel that he played pretty much better than any Bear player last year while being really underutilized by Nagy. Both he and Cohen together in the backfield would maybe be good twosome to pressure the defense. As for his comment about TE? He might make a better GM than Pace has shown himself to be.

Correct.

That's why it's bullshit when he says BPA or we were happy how the board fell to us. He finds a guy and is taking him no matter what.

This started out kind of manageable but I think he crossed the rubicon with the (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky trade-up and then had kind of been broken since. The fact that he didn't trade up for Kmet is novel, and indicates that perhaps Pace no longer has absolute control over the franchise. The Bears brass may have told him no more trading up.

He was trying to trade up for someone. My guess is Higgins.

It is pretty obvious that they would've taken Kmet in the first round if they could. He was their guy in this draft.

So Pace addresses the Jaylon Johnson injury concerns by saying that he's only actually missed one game. Which I guess is a good point. I definitely like the Johnson pick way more than the Kmet pick, the potential there is outstanding. He was really one of the better corners in the whole draft but damn...the injuries are terrifying and he may be less motivated to play through it now that he's getting paid.

Did they need to trade up for this? What did they give up from next year?

6'3 251

Overview
He's quite raw and in the dead center of his developmental phase, but it's hard not to get excited by the traits and flashes. Gipson was a late bloomer so he is still a little behind in his fundamentals and technique. He doesn't have go-to moves and counters, but the rush is real with a long, explosive first step and the athleticism and length to win the edge and harass the pocket. He needs better hand usage and lower body strength to handle himself at the point of attack, but he is a rangy tackler. Gipson isn't NFL-ready yet, but he's a potential diamond in the rough as a long-limbed defensive end in odd or even fronts.

Strengths
Added nearly 60 pounds at Tulsa and got better each year
Emulates brother, who was a big, rugged forward at Kansas State
First step is long and explosive
Long-limbed frame can overwhelm lesser blockers
Flexible and athletic to wriggle around pass pro
Has tools for dangerous stab-and-run bull rush
Chip on shoulder matches passion in his play
Longest lateral slide you'll ever see
Able to stride through gap, leaving tackles behind
When he activates hands, they are quite violent
Reactive agility helps him track and tackle in space

Weaknesses
Talented, but still very raw
Plays at full speed but technique is behind
Inefficient movement with arms and legs flying all over
Locks into battle and loses sight of the ball
Needs to punch and separate more consistently
Not enough sand in his pants at point of attack just yet
Lacks game plan and finesse as a pass rusher
Counter-rush instincts are underdeveloped
High-cut with predictable balance concerns when redirected by power
Hasn't learned to batter the edge with hand skills

This is actually a very astute pick, not gonna lie. I just hate when Pace trades up.

It's Leonard Floyd in the 5th round; I'm fine with that.
