Tillman is not HOF caliber. Not even close. If he has a couple bad games, many fans will be calling for him to be benched or moved to safety.

Who are the really great players who didn't make multiple Pro Bowls and/or All-Pro teams?

Ok, sorry for not seeing this, Joe.

First, The HOF DBs:

Defensive Backs (23)
Herb Adderley (CB) 1961-1972 (5PB, 4AP)
Lem Barney (CB) 1967-1977 (7PB, 7AP)
Mel Blount (CB) 1970-1983 (5PB, 4AP)
Willie Brown (CB) 1963-1978 (5AFL AS, 4PB)
Jack Butler (CB) 1951-59 (4PB, 3AP)
Jack Christiansen (S) 1951-1958 (5PB, 6AP)
Darrell Green (CB) 1983-2002 - okay, forget about it - Peanut's gonna have to be an outlier!!! :D
Mike Haynes (CB) 1976-1989
Ken Houston (S) 1967-1980
Jimmy Johnson (CB) 1961-1976
Paul Krause (S) 1964-1979
Dick (Night Train) Lane (CB) 1952-1965
Yale Lary (S) 1952-1953, 1956-1964
Dick LeBeau (CB) 1959-1972
Ronnie Lott (CB-S) 1981-1994
Mel Renfro (S-CB) 1964-1977
Deion Sanders (CB-KR-PR) 1989-2000, 2004-2005
Emmitt Thomas (CB) 1966-1978
Emlen Tunnell (S) 1948-1961
Roger Wehrli 1969-1982
Larry Wilson (S) 1960-1972
Willie Wood (S) 1960-1971
Rod Woodson 1987-2003

I'm not going through those guys one by one, but I'm sure they all played in multiple Pro Bowls. I know off the top of my head that Lott played in about nine or ten.

Yeah, I'm sure his two Super Bowl rings or his Super Bowl MVP or single-season record for touchdowns or top 10 draft status did nothing to contribute to this. Apples and oranges. Peanut is not one of the 24 best DB's of all time.

I don't think there was an OC at any point in Tillman's career who thought "we can't throw his way this week". He has some unique skills which are particularly appreciated by the system in which he plays.

He's not a HOF'er but I do think he deserved to go to a couple more Pro Bowls.

Has he ever been one of the five best CBs in the game at any time?

Don't get me wrong, I like Tillman a lot. But he'd need a LOT to break his way over the next five years or so. That's asking quite a bit.

Briggs will have a problem with too few sacks plus playing alongside Urlacher. I doubt he gets in too. I'm not sure if his case is better or worse; depends what side of the bed I wake up on.

Urlacher and Peppers are no doubters, obviously.

Yeah, he does great at what he does. That play in the end zone vs CJ was outstanding. Just outstanding. I'm not ready to say HOF, but Hall of Very Good I am happy to induct him into.

He definitely made Gruden's Hall of Slurp. Tillman was making some incredible plays but Gruden was ready to
drive him to Canton right after the game.

why not? he might not have the best stats but he has great stats and his intangibles are something that we havent seen in many years. he is my favorite bear of all time, PERIOD. there is nobody ever better at punching a ball out either. he is the absolute best of all time, any position in that regard.

I agree with IB's points. Tillman to the HOF is a question to be answered in about 10-15 seconds.

No way.

That would be like 69 Cubs who got in. Win a Super Bowl and we can start considering guys outside of Peppers and Urlacher

he's not? How do you define "shutdown corner"? He's been a top 10 CB for 7+ years now. That's not easy to do.
I view the term "shutdown corner" the same I way I do "elite quarterback". Top 10 doesn't cut it. Top 3 maybe.

Quote:
Shutting down Megatron transformed into another high honor for Charles Tillman.

The Chicago Bears cornerback was named the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks after putting the clamps on Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson on Monday night. Tillman held Johnson to three catches for 34 yards in the Bears' 13-7 win. Johnson was targeted 11 times and looked nowhere near his usual self.

The 6-foot-2 Tillman, who shadowed the 6-foot-5 Johnson all over the field, had two pass deflections and two forced fumbles. He also was named Defensive Player of the Week in Week 5 after returning an interception for a score against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 31-year-old Tillman, who was named to his first Pro Bowl last season, seems destined for another Pro Bowl this season.

Tillman will have to wait behind Woodson, Bailey, Barber, Winfield, Reed, Dawkins, Polamalu, and Sharper at the very least for DB enshrinement. So no chance.

Well half those guys are safeties and other than Woodson and troy P..Tillman is better than the rest...Barber has been around a very long time but nothing special.

There are 23 defensive backs in the hall. He will not be joining them. There will be numerous photos and videos in Randall Cobb's hall of fame exhibit so he will probably be seen in the background watching #18 score another TD for the Pack. When they build a hall of very good he can go there.

Barber nothing special?! He was one of the anchors of Tampa's vaunted 1990s/2000s defenses

In 231 games:
Int: 46
PD: 161
TDs: 8
Sacks: 28
FF: 14
Tckls: 978

He's been around a very long time because his play has been great and will in the HoF. You can quibble with Antoine Winfield or Darren Sharper but Ronde Barber is easily ahead of Tillman.

As UMN said, there are only 23 DBs (Safeties & Corners) in the Hall. I already listed 8 who are above Tillman and that doesn't include borderline HoF players like Ty Law or Aeneas Williams who'd likely be above Tillman.

He'll be in the Hall of Very Good. Though, if you're interested in seeing the start of a HoF cornerback career you can tune into the Jags/Pack game and watch the burgeoning greatness of Casey Hayward.

Ronde Barber is a no-brainer. Anyone who argues with that selection just doesnt know what they are talking about. I disagree with Winfield. He's just been a worse version of Tillman, without the special ball-punching skill. He's been an elite tackler at the position, but he's been an average cover corner his whole career, and has never played on a dominant defense. I've never thought of him as anything more than a decent cornerback.
