I think the first part of your post has already happened. A talented, veteran team has been basically eliminated from contention by about mid season or just after, not to mention inexcusable performances against GB and NE. But he will still probably be back.

That article was written in 97, he didn't retire til what? 03 or 04? While he may have been nearing the end of his career he is still Jerry Rice. Why use him like that and did anybody else ever use him that way? It doesn't make a lot of sense when I think about it.

My memory of Jerry Rice with Montana was taking an 11 yard pass and running for 80. Maybe I am cloudy on that. But that is how I see it. I do not recall Rice as Jefferson and the crew taking bombs at 70 yards from Dan Fouts.

If Harbaugh becomes available it would be inexcusable if the Bears didnt hire him after firing Trestman. While their at it look for a QB who can win games. Cutler not the guy. Maybe I'm getting a different version of the 49ers on my internet and television, but I'm completely unclear - my personal bias aside - what rational reason one would have to be clamoring for Jim Harbaugh. I was never on his bandwagon before; with the wheels coming off of everything remotely connected to him, I'm even more staunchly against it.
