If you're going to put him on a level playing field as McCown and rate him in the Trestman offense, yes, he was good against Cincy and NO.

20 million dollars worth? Considering that's 15 million more (a year) than they really could be spending?

I don't think we've seen him against an elite defense this year. Cincy comes close, and he did lead a comeback against them, but that's all I can think of.

I assume if McCown gets stifled against a defense like Seattle's, we'd be wondering if Cutler's big-play potential would have made a difference. This is not to say Cutler should be the man for the next 3-5 years or whatever, but to state the obvious it's always ideal to have a QB with elite skills. For whatever reason Cutler hasn't been that guy despite him having elite ability, but his failures shouldn't invalidate the you-need-an-elite-QB thesis.

I think you could probably get him for 13-16.

Is your plan to stick with McCown next year?

This feels like the Forte argument a couple years ago where "why pay him - we can pick a RB off the RB tree". Well Forte is good. The alternative is a guy like Bush.

So, who QBs next year? Fitzpatrick?

Did everyone see that Cutler had a QB rating over 90 in the first 5 of the first 6 games of a new offense while leading the team to a 4-2 record or was I the only one?

He's clearly better in this system than he's ever been. Think what some time would do.

Look man I'm just saying that I'm not at all willing to pay top 5 franchise money to this guy and he is NOWHERE NEAR top 5 talent. Not even close to it. He's never been that talented and paying him that is wrong.

I love the idea of an elite QB. I'm not sure Cutler fits that description. As Darko pointed out, 15 million on the defense could negate the need for an elite QB given our offense and our coache's whispering abilities. Since our wagon is hitched to Trestman, I would like to see him be able to pick a project and see where it goes. Without some serious attention, the defense is going to get worse before it gets better. Cutler is in the twilight of a mediocre career, let someone else pay him.

He's getting 3/30 from somebody for sure. I'll be shocked if he doesn't get at least 4/50.

Cutler.

I still haven't heard who we are starting next year. McCown? Bradford? It better not be a rookie 3rd rounder.

He'll get more than that from some team out there. I hope it's not the Bear.

We? Trestman will make an all-pro out of Sheelhouse(sic).

One of those teams will pay him a lot more, IMO. He's going to get overpaid by somebody.

Juice Williams can throw the ball 80 yards in the air.

He's clearly better in this system than he's ever been. Think what some time would do.

No doubt he had solid stats, but some of that also came in garbage time, most notably against NO. I'm no trained observer of QB play, but in my own world it seems the offense is slightly more fluid with McCown in the pocket. It seems the "system" really comes to life when he's back there, as opposed to Cutler sort of vacillating between making the right throw according to pre-planned progressions, and him freelancing a bit because he's got the arm to make it work.

This is no argument for McCown to become the guy in the short or long-term future; he's clearly a limited QB at the end of an unremarkable career, but I think his success validates Trestman's work, and provides a good prototype for the next QB should the Bears decide to part ways with Cutler: studious, patient, and willing to take what the defense gives him.

Franchise him and see how long McCown can keep up the super sub show.

I don't think Cutler would play for Jacksonville or St.Louis or Houston because he's a bitchy fuck and they're terrible.

Franchise + QB draft pick is the least risky option.

Minnesota is the correct move for him. If he is not franchised.

Well, he's not going to say no, I'd rather backup somebody on a 1 year deal.
