There are plenty of psychos stalking the sidelines of football teams so Olin's temperament wouldn't concern me. You'd have to reign him in.

None of this really matters. It was just undignified and inappropriate for George to address it the way he did. He was asked the question and could have simply answered that he disputes some of the story.

Remember, George was a TV reporter so presumably he should be the best PR person in the building.

This is football, why was it inappropriate?

PR and reporting are (were)vastly different disciplines.

I agree that George should have handled it differently though. Pace himself said the same thing to Olin yesterday according to what Olin told Biggs.

And Olin has a history of assaulting team members going back to college.

The list of teams ready and willing to offer him a job was exactly one.

I got the impression he's a POS for mocking Olin's "Hall of Fame" career when this guy has accomplished nothing as CEO of the Bears.

because he is an executive, speaking for an entire organization who has to consider all of the results of his words.

It's like when Kenny Williams went off on Frank Thomas. You can be correct in substance and still be wrong.

Olin ain't Frank Thomas. Olin ain't even Tom Thayer. But apparently he's somebody important enough to be brought up at the biggest Bear press conference of the year.

Olin made the NFL's ALL-Decade Team for the 2000s and is a 6-time Pro Bowler. He was a hell of a player. But yeah, he's not that important, and that's why George's comments were an embarrassment.

I thought his comments about Olin were entertaining. He appeared to show human emotion before turning the filter back on. That and discussing Nagy's son was the only time that happened.

His comments were definitely unintentionally entertaining.

He attempted to mock Olin, but only succeeded in further embarrassing himself.

So with all this extra attention being brought to the Olin saga because it was McCaskey's fault for answering the question asked of him, he should be rolling in job offers from teams that cant wait to have him on their staff. Olin playing 3d chess !!

You don't think he could find a job at the D1 college or higher level if he were willing to move?

He has FU money and a young family.

I'm relatively certain U of Hawaii would be thrilled to take him up if he offered his services.

As gd point out, you can be right in substance but wrong in the way you go about it. George was wrong in the way he answered the question yesterday, even if he said factual information.

The press conference immediately following a 6-11 season and starting the search for your 4th head coach and 3rd GM in the last eight years is not the time nor the place to go after a former player. A player who had been the best offensive lineman for the franchise over the last 30 years no less.

I don't doubt Olin's story, but his handling of this has pretty much guaranteed he's not going to be involved in anything with the Bears in the future. He should be rich enough that he could work for free unless he's so bad with money he needs to a job to pay bills after playing in the NFL.

If the money didn't matter to him then why not take the Bears offer?

What limits his chances is that he isn't willing to put in the grunt work that is an entry level coaching position. The way people talk about what those first jobs were it's basically working all your waking hours for little to no respect doing the jobs that no one else on the coaching staff wants to do. My guess is they all have stories like the "Brian Kelly invited me to a party to park cars" one.

I said that earlier as well.

I guess the Bears offer was only for a consultancy during training camp. It doesn't seem like he wants to coach. He's coaching his kids, the first of whom supposedly went to football powerhouse U of I.

No, I don’t think any college wants that cement headed, chip on his shoulder problem with management, violent loose cannon anywhere around their young players.

Did Olin ever actually say he was interested in working for the Bears? I've heard it phrased as "they came to him with a job offer", but was he sniffing around first?

I suspect Olin doesn't want to coach. He simply wants to be a consultant that offers his advice on personnel and coaching decisions.

Regarding the training camp job, it seems like the idea of working with Hiestand and Raiola on a short-term basis appealed to him because he's close with both of those guys. Like you said, though, I don't think he was/is interested in something beyond that.

Kirby Smart declared in his victory speech last night that "There's gonna be some property torn up in Indianapolis tonight!", and yet you think Olin is too much of a neanderthal for college football?

There is no evidence of any one ever showing an interest in Olin other then a grade school football team, and the Bears.

The Bears should be DB'ed for that reason alone.

And Btw, there is no chance Coach Fitz wants that combustion chamber around his program on a daily basis.

So with all this extra attention being brought to the Olin saga because it was McCaskey's fault for answering the question asked of him, he should be rolling in job offers from teams that cant wait to have him on their staff. Olin playing 3d chess !!
