Briggs to Bears: Rescind the tag or trade me
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Under the right circumstances, two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs could play his entire career with the Chicago Bears, and be a happy man.

Under the restrictive terms of the franchise designation with which the Bears have marked him, though, and with the defending NFC champions apparently offering him nothing more than the one-year option it entails, Briggs said Sunday evening that he doesn't want to play another day for the club that brought him into the league in 2003.

"There's a difference between the Chicago Bears team and the Chicago Bears organization," Briggs told ESPN.com, when reached Sunday evening at his home in suburban Chicago. "The Chicago Bears team? The coaches, players, city and fans? Yeah, I could stay there forever. I love it. But the Chicago Bears organization? I don't want to be there anymore. I won't play for them and I'll do everything in my power to keep from playing there."

In a 30-minute conversation by phone, Briggs -- distressed by the restrictions of the NFL franchise tag, by his inability to shop himself in the free agent market, and by the recent departure of defensive coordinator Ron Rivera -- offered his first insights into his current situation.

And he offered, Briggs said, what is the only truly viable solution to an untenable circumstance.

"They need to either [rescind] the franchise tag, and let me move on, or trade me to another team," Briggs said. "Because that's about the only way this thing can have any kind of a positive resolution."

Having failed last spring to consummate a long-term contract with Briggs -- reportedly a six-year, $33 million deal on which both sides worked for several weeks before the negotiations collapsed -- the Bears employed the franchise tag last week to keep the four-year veteran off the open market.

It marked the first time under the stewardship of general manager Jerry Angelo, who in the past has acknowledged the potential acrimony that accompanies the franchise marker, the Bears have used the restriction.

The qualifying offer for a franchise linebacker is $7.206 million, the average of the top five highest paid players at the position. But only three days into free agency, top defenders such as cornerback Nate Clements (with San Francisco), edge rusher Adalius Thomas (New England) and middle linebacker London Fletcher-Baker (Washington) have signed lucrative contracts with new teams.

Sitting at home, watching the free agency parade pass him by, Briggs became, he acknowledged, increasingly frustrated by his lot. And not just, he emphasized, by the financial implications of the situation.

"You hate to get into that whole 'lack of respect' thing," Briggs said. "But you play four years for a team, do your best, exceed their expectations, right? And every year, it's like, 'You played great, Lance.' And they kind of dangle the carrot, like they're going to take care of you, and then it doesn't happen. I mean, I was a middle-round pick and I've played well for them. Four years and at just middle-round salaries. I haven't caused any kinds of problems. I've done everything they asked and them some. And I don't know if I ever really knew where I stood with them until they put the tag on me."

A former Arizona State standout, Briggs was chosen by the Bears in the third round of the 2003 draft. He earned a starting job as a rookie, emerged by his third seasons as one of the NFL's top young weakside 'backers, and was chosen for the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons.

Even playing in the lengthy shadow of middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, with whom he has become close friends, Briggs is regarded leaguewide as a top defender and playmaker.

He did sit out the voluntary portion of the team's offseason workouts last spring, it should be noted, but reported for the mandatory workouts and was in training camp on time.

There is little doubt that if Briggs was in the unrestricted pool right now, he would be a coveted player. But the Bears seems inclined to force him to play for the one-year franchise offer and there have been no discussions on a long-term deal since last spring. Under the current rules, Chicago has until July 16 to sign Briggs to a longer deal or he must play 2007 for the franchise number.

Which is something, Briggs said Sunday night, he won't do.

"It's a great bunch of guys with a great future, but I can't see myself as being part of that future anymore," Briggs said. "Whatever options are available to me, I'll take advantage of them. But going back and playing for the Bears again, no, I don't see that as an option. Not one more day. Not at all."

I can't say I blame him for feeling that way. Hopefully the damage isn't irreparable.

I have no sympathy for Lance Briggs. If you don't like being tagged under the Franchise label, call Gene Upshaw and complain to him.

And he is still going to be paid $7 million dollars next year. Sometimes the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Wilber Marshall never seemed to be the same impact player after he left the Bears.

When Warrick Holdman and Colvin left the Bears, there was an outcry on how the Bears were going to replace them. While I believe Angelo can't draft for offense, I believe he will find a defensive replacement, Briggs was a third rounder.

Holdman and Colving were both very good players with the Bears, but they weren't ALL PRO guys like Briggs.
True, Angelo has a great track record of drafting defense, but it's still a long shot to find ANYBODY to replace Briggs production, let alone a draft pick when the Bears aren't picking until 31.

Signing Briggs to a long-term deal could mean the Bears wouldn’t be able to afford at least 2 upcoming free agents from Grossman, Berrian, Harris, Vasher and Tillman AND it would risk upsetting Urlacher, who’d be making less money than Briggs.

I love Briggs, but I’m not sure how realistic it is to have your two highest paid players at LB, especially when you have other key members of your team coming up on free agency.

I have heard that the Bears are asking for a mid 1st round pick for Briggs. Everything I have heard is that the Bears may settle for a high 2nd or a low 1st rounder if they feel there is a quality player available for them. There are a lot of undersized, fast LB’s in the draft. None LB’s ran a 4.59 or lower in the 40 this year and most weigh 235+. This could be a good year to land a 2nd or 3rd round developmental LB to fit our scheme.

Let’s put this into perspective. With Angelo’s track record for finding great talent in the 2nd through 5th rounds of the draft, if the Bears can deal down from the 31st pick to the mid 2nd round and pick up an extra 3rd rounder, possibly deal Thomas Jones for a 3rd round pick, and deal Lance Briggs for a late 1st round pick, that would leave the Bears with:

A late 1st round pick, a mid 2nd round pick, a late 2nd round, a mid 3rd round pick, a late 3rd round pick, an extra 3rd round pick, a late 4th round pick, and a late 5th round pick.

I don’t know about you guys, but I could handle a guy known for pulling great talent out of these rounds having five of the first 100 picks in the draft. The team has to start thinking for the future. I wouldn’t pay Briggs $9 million a year and he is reportedly asking for $63 million for 7 years. The Bears have a tremendous amount of holes in their depth that we could fill with a very deep draft this year. In that 1st five picks, we could pull a high quality DB, a couple O-lineman, a receiver, and a LB to compete with Williams to replace Briggs. It could be better than having disgruntled distractions on the team that are going to leave next year anyway.

Plus historically, the weakside linebacker position in the cover 2 has been an easier position to fill throughout the years. In Angelo, I trust.

i don't know if oakland would do this, but, do you think they'd trade randy moss for briggs?

if they would, i'd jump on that in a second. when was the last time moss was in the news? 2 years ago (traffic cop)? i think he's basically a good guy and the bears can definitely use a game breaker wideout.

am i on crack?

i'll hang up and listen to my answer.

Oakland would probably do that in a second, but I doubt the Bears would want Moss.

Yes and No. His rookie season they bounced him all over the line. Last year they moved him out to LT and got smoked by the speed rushers in the AFC like merriman. He might be better suited to RT in the NFL.

I dont think the Bears should do anything. Briggs is going to play. He can't sit out the season and pay all the fines. And with free agency after next year, you know he will want to be a probowler again.

The Bears simply cannot let Briggs walk this year. They have 0 depth at any of the LB positions. I don't think there is a single LB in the draft who could walk in and start for them. The FA market is weak (although Simmons might be of some interest). This one will most likely be ugly.

Briggs is a butthole, hes replaceable.

Why would you want a money driven guy like that on your team? I know the Bears have plenty of them already, hell most players are. Whats happened to the good guys who would take pay cuts and salary restructuring just to be on a winner?

Guys back in the glory days who had to work jobs in the off season, hell they made more in the off season. Really sad how money has ruined sports and turned people into complete tools.

Lance Briggs, piss off bud.

When is the last time someone at your company took a pay cut so the company could make more money? People seem to forget that sports is a business and the laws of economics rule business.
