Urlacher all but confirms report saying he has arthritic back

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher all but confirmed an Internet report that he has an arthritic back after a subpar performance in Sunday's 16-7 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Urlacher was credited with just four tackles on Sunday, another poor performance in an inconsistent season for him.

The six-time Pro Bowl selection told foxsports.com that his back has been bothering him since training camp and that he recently had a specialist in Pittsburgh examine it.

"He confirmed what the team told me, that they think it's an arthritis type of thing," Urlacher was quoted as saying in a story posted Sunday afternoon. "The thing that's so frustrating is there is no clear-cut solution to give me relief. I just have to deal with the pain."

Asked if that report was accurate, Urlacher said "probably," but had little else to say after the game other than he will answer fans' questions on foxsports.com. It was not clear when he will do that.

The Bears would not confirm the report.

Urlacher, who has been inconsistent this season, has said little to reporters in recent weeks, often limiting his responses to one or two words. He had 15 tackles in the season opener at San Diego and 13 last week at Philadelphia. But he had just five against Minnesota on Oct. 14 and three against Dallas in Week 3, although he contributed two sacks in that game.

"As far as what I know about Brian, he played today, he's not on the injury list," coach Lovie Smith said. "As far as his back, there's nothing wrong with his back that would cause him not to be able to play."

Why does he tell Jay Glazer this on FOX, but not the Chicago media? Is it a respect thing or him being a tool?

From what I've heard, he's actually pretty good friends with Glazer. Glazer has been a good source of information in the past as well for Bears/Urlacher news - I believe it was him who broke the story about Urlacher having that season ending surgury a few years ago as well.

In true Brian Urlacher form, I'd like to respond to his interview by simply saying to him: "you're an ass". Any further information from me will require the inquiries of a national media member.

Who is the bigger douche here? Urlacher for biting the hand that fed him, or the local fans who ignored a lot of questions about Urlacher's 'performance' or statistics. He's never really ever said anything publicly on any real issue, for apparently good reasons, and has just always been something of a physical freak of nature  , who when times were going well everyone (again  ) loved, but now...

This season has really made Urlacher look like a huge turd. He's been a prick to the press and ignored everything going on around him.

Lovie as well has turned this team against the press, and it's really wearing on me as a fan. It's getting harder and harder to even like this team, even as a diehard. They're being scathing and untruthful, and think the press are ignorant and not truly understanding of a football organization.

Sheesh.

Hi. I'm Brian Urlacher. I haven't been playing well this year because I um...well erm...my back hurts? Yeah. That's it. I have an arthritic back. Just go ahead and try to prove otherwise. So if I continue to not be good this year, you can ask Glazer why, and he'll tell you that it's my mysterious back arthritis.

Oh, and fuck off.

Hmm, this sounds just like another team in this city where the coach used the "us against the world" mantra and made his team into a bunch of unlikeable dickheads.
That coach is now managing in Cincinnati

1. Agreed.
2. Cincinatti will be a hilarious place to watch baseball this spring.
