So after this I'd say that the taste in my mouth from the shit that the Bears just made us all eat can not be purged by even the finest mouthwash (Not even Listerine).

The record indicates a relatively average team. I would argue that there is an underlying emptiness to this team one which will set us up for more Lion like future than a return to prominence.

This underlying emptiness was shown in the Superbowl year and has gotten worse despite a small respite this season.

My question to is if for some inconceivable reason Jerry Angelo appointed you the CSFMB member Interim GM for the offseason while he goes away to get a surgical procedure to make him less boring.

What steps would YOU take to make this team a long term winner? Because it seems like the team is on a downward trend.

Or maybe you think the team is on the right track?

Boldin for a second and third rounder
Maluaga in the first round
best available guard in the 4th
offensive and defensive linemen the rest of the way

Find a solid but unspectacular SS in free agency

That works for me, but I doubt you get Boldin for only a 2nd and 3rd.

You fix this mess by NOTsigning Orton to an extension, he has proved that he is an average QB at best. You sign Boldin if you can, or draft Michael Crabtree if possible, both highly unlikely I know, but be creative for once. I don't know if there is kick ass pass rusher out there on the free agent market but if there is and you can't sign Boldin, which they won't, you must sign him. Da Bears can't pass rush for shiite. There are many problems with this team, but those two aspects can be rectified quickly. This team isn't really a 9-7 team they did play the f-ing lions twice. Hey can you swear on this site without getting in trouble?

I'm all on board with field turf. I mean the grass on the sides of the tollway are more suitable for a game of football. But that is just a maintenance issue for the grounds crew.

The problem with Orton is he can't throw the deep ball even with this crew of receiving rejects that is a glaring hole. Secondly, Orton has proved he can be a reliable backup which is a commodity worth having, but as the backup not the starter. However, Who can you replace him with?

A receiver would be great however, we have no one to throw the ball to them. Also, The empirical evidence of a receiver making a QB is well almost impossible to find

The defense is aging, has no identity nor consistency and is too injury prone. We need lots of draft picks and substantive success in the draft with 1st rounders WHO PERFORM.

from the files of Major Evident,
Let Grossman go!

Boldin isn't a FA. Mult much?

Franchise QB, star WR and a beast on the d line that will decapitate quarterbacks.

Why go LB in the first round, GD?

I see three definite needs:

DE
WR
S

DE and WR are 1 and 1a in my book; safety is third. I think one of the needs has to be addressed via free agency or trade... probably WR. Your options there are either Boldin or Chad Johnson via trade, or hope that Houshmanzedah isn't reupped by Cincy, or else it's a long list of suck on the free agent market.

I think the guy is phenomenal, the bears have an immediate need and I am sorry to say this but Urlacher is done. Also he will be an asset in rushing the passer which neither Urlacher nor Briggs have done well.

If there was a defensive end who could play the run and have 10 sacks at the position the Bears draft, I'm all for that.

So I get to be GM? My first minute on the job I launch Smith, Babich and Turner. I throw a lot of money at Rivera. I also make a rule that Angelo (upon his return) will only handle drafting in the seventh round (and that he can't go trading down for six picks in the seventh round).

QB - I'm not sure who the UFAs are, but I'm signing one or two. I'm opening the competition from day one to Orton, Hanie, and whomever I sign.

You think Ocho and Orton would get along? And both of those guys are over 30. Don't get me wrong, it's an upgrade but I don't think it would make the Bears that much better. What would the Bears have to give up to get into the top 5. A 1st, 2nd and Urlacher, or maybe Vasher. Is that worth it to get Crabtree if he's available?

It will take more than a 2nd and 3rd to get Boldin. But I would love to have him.

Maualuga won't be around when the Bears are drafting. However, I would do cartwheels if they drafted Crabtree.

I agree that the needs are DE, S, and WR. LB help would be nice. Drafting a QB between rounds 2-5 would be smart, but I couldn't tell you who.

Big needs that would be #1 would be QB and WR.

After that the d-line and the secondary would be on my radar. These would best be addressed in the draft while the top needs will need to come from free agency.

Here's a list of likely UFA WR's
http://www.footballsfuture.com/2009/fa/wr.html

an interesting one is:

Quote:
Devery Henderson, UFA, New Orleans Saints
Henderson’s career high in receptions may be 32, but he’s a deep threat and seems to make big plays almost on a weekly basis when things are clicking. He’s had at least three scores in each season of his four-year career and is currently on pace to surpass his career high of 745 yards receiving that he posted in ’06. If the Saints let Henderson go, someone may give him a shot at a bigger role.

and the list of UFA QBs

http://www.footballsfuture.com/freeagents.html

The most interesting one for me as a GM is

Quote:
Matt Cassel, UFA, New England Patriots
While he was inconsistent for a majority of the season, Cassel has come on strong the past couple of weeks. It appears as though he has adjusted to being a starter. He has reached the 400-yard passing mark the past two games and tallied six touchdowns to just one interception in that time. His passer rating for the season is 90.5 and he has a decent touchdown to interception ratio for a first time starter. Cassel may continue being a backup in New England, but if he keeps playing as well as he has lately, a team may risk luring him away in hopes he can be a legitimate starter.

Yeah I know but compared to the others?
Garcia
Boller
Warner...
I'll take Cassel because the Bears have mid round picks which doesn't appeal to me looking for a Franchise QB.

I never said the Ocho trade would be smart, it's just an option. I think you need to find out just how badly Arizona has to get rid of Boldin. Crabree is not worth that much.

I get the feeling that the real WR value this year is going to be in the 2nd round. My guy is Igesias at OU, but there's some others in that range as well.

AHHH! NOOOO! NO MATT CASSELL! And the Bears already have a better Devery Henderson in Devin Hester.

Good to stream and hear Doug and OB, then check in here, kind of like some group therapy.

Shedding a bit of a tear, missing home. Good to see this place still alive and well.

If you wait a couple of hours you won't need to wait for a projection.

Did you see who else was on the list? Its slim pickens in this off season and they will have a middle to upper draft choice and contrary to you assertions i did not suggest that those two men would solve the problems this Bears team have found themselves in.

Those are just some of the guys that might help this team be good in the long term, part of the solution not THE solution. Lest we forget football is a team sport some parts happen to be more important. A solution that is not myopic would need to include younger guys that can make an impact right away and in the draft this year the Bears are not in a position to get the best talent.

There is the Dolphin example, however, I believe that their organization was lacking in leadership, the Bears may have a deficit of leadership however, their lack of talent and the degradation of older talent is more noticeable.

There seems to be a gap between the Bears record and what I think to be their "real" record. Their record next year without much alteration will be more pathetic and leave us with more angst.

Doug and OB post game show supplied at least a weeks worth of great drops for BB. Fire everyone, bring in Cowher, hire an all ex-Bears coaching staff, draft Tim Tebow. Just to name a few.

Matt Cassell isn't the answer to any question. Just because he's the best of a piss-poor group doesn't mean he's a solution.

Shaun Mc Donald would be a better option than Henderson, but we are still talking about complimentary receivers.

Rudy Carpenter will be available in the 4th-6th round... I think he'd translate well to the NFL game once he learns that he needs to get rid of the ball and not take a sack. Definite pocket passer sort of guy. Also need to draft OL sometime soon so we can get a little younger there... St Clair, Kreutz, Garza, and Tait will all be 30+ by the time next year starts... one of these years that line is going to fall apart completely, and it won't matter who you have at QB or WR.
