Butkus & London (New detective show?)-NOT FIRED! The Bears are working to clarify the news release that included Luke Butkus and Charles London on a list of coaches, including offensive coordinator Ron Turner, who were fired Tuesday.
Four offensive assistants were fired: Turner, tight ends coach Rob Boras, quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton and offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. Butkus and London were quality control/assistant coaches who, when they joined the organization in 2007, knew it was on a short-term basis. They were not fired.
Typically, such assistants come in on two-year deals, similar to graduate-assistant positions that many college coaches start out with. Butkus and London excelled in their roles -- Butkus as an assistant to Harry Hiestand with the offensive linemen and London as an assistant to Darryl Drake with the wide receivers -- and they were asked back for a third season in 2009. Both knew at the outset of the year that it would be their final year in the positions.
It's important to clarify because in a business where firings happen often, Butkus and London were not fired. Butkus, who played under Hiestand at Illinois, previously had a graduate-assistant gig at Oregon. London was a running backs coach at Duke and before that he also had a graduate assistant job.
