I know it has some meatball in it, but

His contract is up next year with the Cubs, signed 2007 for 5 years. The guy would be 26 years old after next season and be out of a contract, unless of course Hendry exercises some ridiculous options of $3 M and $3.5.

The guy needs to make a major step up this year or why not go talk to the Bears? The kid was a great WR. Was like a 6'5" Tom Waddle. Caught everything thrown to him.

Maybe we can get Charlie Ward out of retirement to be the backup QB while we are at it.

Jeff Samardzija gave up four runs in two innings Friday in a loss to the Brewers.

Jim Edmonds and Gregg Zaun went deep for two of the five hits that Samardzija allowed. He didn't get a single out on the ground before departing. Nothing Samardzija did last year suggests that he belongs in a major league rotation. He's getting a chance to contend for a spot, but he should open the season in Triple-A.

While he may not belong on a major league roster right now, a baseball contract is guaranteed while football not so much. Think I'd go with the for sure $ if it was up to me plus he could play more seasons in MLB than NFL.

I never said the guy should leave now! No doubt he plays baseball until the money goes away, which is after next season.

When his contract is up, I could see another team taking ahcance on him for $400K, or the league min 1 year. I would guess after 2011 the contracts he would get offered would be the same, all loaded with roster bonuses.

Considering He is closer to being an insurance salesman than a MLB pitcher, after this season it would be a good move to explore the options.

Coming out of college he was better than any WR we currently have. I think at worst he was a borderline #1 WR/great #2 WR.

Wouldn't he have to re-enter the draft though?

Rick, dont think like that it is Meatballish!

The guy should suck as a baseball player before he tries football again I guess?

I think past age 25 you no longer have to be in the draft, might be age 27?

He probably gets a $400K signing bonus and a $1 mill roster bonus wioth a $1 contract, much btter than $450K pitching for the Royals like SOME I guess think is better

Sign Jeff S then move Zorich to LB. No...just no. It wouldn't surprise me if the Bears were interested in Jeff though. Wasn't he thought to be a 2nd round draft pick?
If the Bears don't fix the OL & WR positions, Peppers will be a huge waste of money.

Bears don't think like that. They got Peppers; they did their "fiduciary duty." Any thoughts of Peppers by himself not being enough doesn't enter equation. I point you to our QB.

Five years away from football is way to long to stay away and expect to play in the NFL. Look at Vick after two years away. I loved him at ND, but his football days are long gone.

1. He isnt away from Professional sports, so it's not like he is out of shape and I don't "EXPECT" him to be that good.
2. The eagles just exercised a $1.5 M option on Vick and thats because other teams wanted him (St. L, Oakland). OIf course it takes a guy time to get back into it, but Vick is a bad example for your points.
3. After 5 years of trying baseball and if the money is the same for his 6th year , whether it be Football or baseball, I would give Football a try.
5. He was a MUCH higher projected player in football than baseball. (Unless you use Hendrys prediction system)
4. If he gets sent down this year on what is looking like a Cubs depleted bullpen, then my 'meatball' thought takes on a life of it's own if he can't make this team.

This is not about quitting right now and trying to play football, it is about after 5 years of trying to be a MLB pitcher and not making it, maybe trying the sport that you were much better at is a better option? Or you can Dick Jauron it and just not try because well 'because", as Dick Jauron runs off the field with 40 seconds left not trying a 56 yard FG one year because, well "because"

Nobody can blame the kid for taking the $10M the Cubs offered him out of Notre Dame, but that well appears to be drying up fast.

Those are actually the Team Options , which are probably MARKET rate if the kid panned out like they wanted.

Another great Hendry signing. This guy has done shit since joining the Cubs. At least trade his ass for a veteran releiver for middle innings.

No no no...trading him now would be foolish, this is when he is suppossed to 'get it". I don't expect him to be the great savior, but you put the time and money in, so let it play out.

Hmmm, get paid six or seven figures (guaranteed) to throw a ball a few times a day for five or six months and (likely) play until you're 35 or 40 or get paid six or seven figures (not guaranteed) to get the shit beat out of you for 8 months a year, for about four or five years (if you're lucky)?

Why is everyone assuming he is getting paid when this contract is done? If he remains as mostly a minor leaguer after 5 years, at best he gets a spring training invite to another team making the minimum of $400K.

The issue is he probably would not make much more his first year back in the NFL and I am 100% sure someone will give him a chance.

In his heart after 5 years of pitching he will know if he can do it or not, then giving Football a try again might be the best move he can make and the most $$$$ upside.

They will give him a chance to make the team, but in NFL no money is guaranteed. And certainly no NFL team will give him any sort of upfront money since he hasn't played football in so long. IMHO, he is better off taking a minor league MLB deal because the money is guaranteed, while the money he would make in the NFL as a reserve is week to week and he has a way below average chance of making any sort of regular squad team. Honestly, he needs to figure out a way to parlay his advantages into a stable long term career... and he is a smart guy, so I imagine he has a plan.

I don't find BF thoughts to be meatball at all. The guy was a talented WR. I don't know if he'd have it to be a good pro WR, but that doesn't make the idea stupid.

He would undoubtedly get a tryout from someone if he chose to pursue football.

I hear the Arena League pays really well.

I suggest that some of you forward your ideas for trading up to grab the great Golden Tate in the bottom of the first round, then taking a flyer on this guy (who wasn't as good) four-five years ago. It would be subway alum/meatball heaven

IMO Samardzija now is probably much worse/slower/less prepared than Iglesias (who barely merited any mention last year). In my book that makes him no better than fifth on the Bears' depth chart. Sixth even if Torry Holt & his walker come to Lake Forest.

No doubt the guy does not walk onto a field in a week, he needs to lift, put muscle on, etc, but the guy's skills were from knowing how run a route, great hands, great ability to shield defenders at 6'5" all of which I bet he stall has. IN fact I have seen he has hands, 2 of them to be exact and is still 6'5" as he is taller than me. If his talent was speed and strength, yes that might be a different story.

Spiegs talking this up today!

Really simple, if he cant pitch in the Majors, then either he becomes a WR or he gets a real job?

Hendry paid him enough that he would not ever have to get a real job if he didn't want to
