Last year, the Chicago Bears had two active quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. They were Jay Cutler, of course, and Caleb Hanie, the second-year free agent QB from Colorado State. Now that Mike Martz is the new Offensive Coordinator, he & head coach Lovie Smith appear to be in agreement in regards to a veteran backup QB who could come in the game in the event Cutler gets injured.

The Sun-Times' newest Bears' reporter, Sean Jensen, addressed the topic in a column in today's "Bright One". While Martz was admittedly uneasy with the lack of experience behind Cutler last weekend, there are two seasoned veteran quarterbacks currently available that may fit Martz's new offense. One is Marc Bulger, who Martz coached in St. Louis and was recently released by the Rams. However, Bulger's been injury-prone in recent years. The other is Josh McCown, who was a backup when Martz was in Detroit if memory serves. Needless to say, McCown has bounced around the NFL playing briefly for a number of teams. The book on Josh is that he's accustomed to getting limited snaps and still stepping up when called upon. He's considered more athletic than Bulger, a classic pocket passer. Nevertheless, both of these veterans might be upgrades over Hanie, who has played very limited action in 2 seasons with the Bears.

I'd be fine with bringing in Bulger.

Anyone think looking at Jamarcus Russell would be a good idea? Anybody could fail in that shithole franchise of Oakland.

Edit:   Dammit Dr. Ken. Now I look really stupid.

JaMarcus Russell, Doc, may be the newest candidate among all-time NFL Draft flops. This one was the #1 overall pick with the Raiders in 2007. If I remember correctly, Russell held out of training camp and signed for a lot of money midway through the regular season...He was drafted 2 years after the 49ers drafted Alex Smith, who was also considered a flop until he seemed to rejuvenate his career midway through last season.

Most people seem to think he has the strongest arm in NFL history.

I believe Juice Williams is in camp already. He can throw the ball 85 yards in the air.

Who are we talking about now?

I guess it doesn't matter.

Anyone think that Bulger doesn't want to be here? The guy thinks he can still play, his first choice is not to come and teach Jay how to be a QB.
