BOURBONNAIS -- After a search that began Sunday, the Bears may have their new backup quarterback lined up.

Matt Gutierrez is on his way to training camp to at least visit the team, multiple league sources have told the Tribune. It's not known yet if he has been offered a contract, pending a physical evaluation.

Without a preview of the Bears' emergency quarterback list, which apparently was topped by at least two players no longer interested in playing, it's impossible to say exactly what direction the search for another passer is going to head until a signing is announced.

But the team is at least exploring the possibility of going away from the veteran-with-experience route and signing a younger guy who also would come without experience in the Mike Martz offense.

Gutierrez, who was with the Kansas City Chiefs last season, was an undrafted free agent from Idaho State. He spent 2007 and 2008 with the New England Patriots. The 26-year-old appeared briefly last season with the Chiefs, throwing one pass in the regular season.

Anyone know if they can talk Craig Krenzel out of being a doctor to come back?

Matt Gutierrez? Who the hell is he?  Seriously, you don't have to be Hub Arkush to wonder what in the hell the Bears were thinking in regards to their backup QB situation in the event Jay Cutler gets seriously injured in a game. The jury's still very much out on whether Caleb Hanie is even capable of filling in, and Arkush has questioned Hanie's NFL ability even before he hurt his shoulder Saturday night in the preseason loss to San Diego.
