Brad is averaging about 5 yards less than the league average. His punts don't seem to go beyond 40 yards anymore. Nailing it inside the 20 is great but that is just one facet. Punting it deep and getting your team out of the shadow of your own endzone counts for something, too. His poor punt led to the Seahawk game breaking TD drive last week.

Bears just signed punter Rich McGee to "back up" Maynard. I guess the coaching staff noticed the same stuff I have. Maynard was inconsistent going back to last year.

After a shaky game for Brad Maynard that raised questions about whether he is fully healthy, the Bears have signed punter Richmond McGee to the practice squad.

Maynard had seven punts in Sunday's 17-14 loss to the Washington Redskins and his gross average was only 36.3 yards. Asked after the game if he was healthy, Maynard wasn't thrilled with the line of questioning.

Interestingly, the Friday before the Seattle game when Maynard finished punting in practice, he immediately huddled with a trainer and strength and conditioning coach Rusty Jones and went inside Halas Hall while the rest of practice resumed. He had a strong day then, and kicked well against the Seahawks.

The punting didn't go so well against the Redskins, and if Maynard needs to rest during the off week, McGee can handle punting chores. McGee was with the Bears during part of training camp, and also spent 2009 in camp with the team. This also will allow special-teams coordinator Dave Toub to monitor McGee's progress since the summer.

Maynard has averaged 38.4 yards per punt for the season and has a net of 34.2 with 15 punts inside the 20-yard line and only three touchdbacks.

I'm actually wish you here JP. The past few home games I've been saying it after every punt. The Bears never seem to be able to flip the field on any team. Brad's had a great career, but it's clear his better days are behind him.

He hasn't looked right all year, maybe it's time for Maynard to go. Hell, I thought he was old when he got here 8 years ago.

Yes, He has been as steady as you could ask for. I hope it is an injury and he still has something left, but even the Seattle game,he could not punt more then 40.

the giants filled retiring punter Jeff Feagles shoes with young powerful punter Matt Dodge this year, and while Dodge can punt the hell out of it, he has gotten burned badly out-kicking the coverage leading to huge returns (such as last nights 70 yard in-the-air punt leading to Dez Bryant 93-yard fiasco). All of this leaves this fan pining for the days of Feagles 40 yard punts and inside-the-20 accuracy.

id rather have 40 yards covered up every time and a great I-20 punter over the long booming punts. i havent given up on dodge, but he needs to improve the I-20 stuff.

Of all the things to complain about with this years team, we have finally gotten to the punter. And I love that Angelo sees fit to replace him.... not the OL... but the punter. Maybe he can sign another DE or DT to fix this mess, too.

Yeah, Maynard can't kick long, but who gives a shit. I don't see it as the reason we give up any points... yet.
