Police have charged a man with raping a woman at the Massachusetts home of Chicago Bears safety Brandon Meriweather(notes) this summer.
James Roberts, 28 and of Biloxi, Miss., has pleaded innocent to a charge he raped a woman at Meriweather’s home on Payson Road in Foxboro, Mass., on July 13. The alleged incident occurred when Meriweather was still with the New England Patriots. The team released him as part of its final cuts.
Meriweather has not been charged with a crime.
“There has been no allegation against anyone but Roberts," a spokesman for the Norfolk County District Attorney told the Sun Chronicle of Attleboro, Mass.
A Sept. 20 pre-trial conference is scheduled.
Meriweather was selected to the Pro Bowl as an alternate the last two seasons but fell out of favor with the Patriots. He’s had other incidents pop up in the past. Police in Florida questioned him in March about a shooting that injured two men outside a bar. The incident followed an altercation, according to police. Meriweather was not charged.
Meriweather was involved in a gun fight in 2006 when he played at the University of Miami. A teammate was shot. Police ruled Meriweather legally used his firearm and he was not charged.
