Haynes on the Block?

Chicago is reportedly considering dealing Haynes and a fourth-round draft pick to Denver for wide receiver Ashley Lelie, but general manager Jerry Angelo insisted Haynes' absence from the premises during Tuesday night's practice was not related to the rumors, the Daily Herald reports.

"That's not the reason he's not here," Angelo said. "He's just having some treatment, and he'll be fine."

The 14th overall pick in 2003, Haynes has never had more than two sacks in any of his three seasons, while playing in 43 games but starting just four. He was moved inside to tackle this year but is buried on the depth chart.

I would do that as well. Lelie would be your #2 and you let Bradley & Berrian fight it out for the 3rd spot. Beyond that, it doesn’t matter much. Currie has made zero on-field contributions to the Bears and I wouldn’t piss on Justin Gage if he were on fire.

I would too. You trade a guy who won't be on the field much...if he's even on the roster...for a guy who will be on the field for 50 plays a game. Lelie may not be much of an answer to the questions in the Bears passing game...no receiver available likely would be....but he makes it better than it is now.

Javon Walker can be had for a second rounder and you guys are willing to give up a fourth for Ashley Lelei...and throw in Michael Haynes! I would not even give Denver the 4th rounder.

The best offer I would make Denver is Haynes and a conditional pick that is no better than a 5th. Haynes and a 6th sounds more like a reasonable deal to me.

Then you might as well forget the whole thing, Dolphin. With multiple other teams interested, that's not going to get it done. Haynes is barely worth the plane ticket out of here, and Lelie is far more talented than any receiver you'd find at the end of the 4th round.

Haynes has no guarantee of making the squad this year so he's a throw in. With Brown being slow from injury, it does raise some concern on depth at the rush end, but they did draft/pickup two guys the last two years (Anderson from Alabama and Khari Long from Baylor) who seem to fit the rush end mold better than Haynes since they are in that 6'2" 260 range rather than big end at 275 lbs.

I'd do this deal if I were Angelo and watch the waiver wire for DE depth.

While I won’t be dancing in the streets if they pick up Lelie, I do think it could be a solid acquisition at a fairly low risk. You just have to hope he has some of that Rick Vaughn “every time that I pitch against you, I’m gonna stick it up your fuckin’ ass!” in him. Maybe Haynes would head to Denver with a similar mentality and it could be beneficial for both sides. Who knows, but I still feel that a bust and a late 4th round pick aren’t much to part with to take a gamble on improving your receivers.

I think you are misinterpreting who is in the position of power in this negotiation. Lelie has hurt the Broncos position with his open call for a trade. If they do not trade him, he will be buried on the bench. It is the Broncos who are desperate.

But maybe they will be able to create a market for him. However, there is a player of equal or superior talent on the market in Porter. The glut decreases the demand.

A 4th rounder is a solid pick. You may not be able to get a top reciever in the 4th, however history has shown you can definitely get a starting RB and undoubtedly could get depth on the OL.

I disagree that teams will be jumping at him in exchange for a 4th. I would take the Kenny Williams approach: set an internal price for him and only negotiate up to that price. If demand is puts the price at greater than you think he is valued, walk away from the deal.

Let's not get crazy about this, it's Ashley Lelei.

Dolphin, I’m not suggesting you treat this like an auction and just keep bidding until you get the guy. All I’m saying is that a) I think Haynes and a 4th rd pick is a fair price, and b) I don’t think you have a shot to get him for Haynes and a 6th rd pick.

Nobody’s going crazy here. Just tossing ideas around. As far as leverage goes, I don’t think it’s quite that simple. Sure, Lelie is holding out and they obviously have to move him. However, their leverage is directly proportional to the number of teams willing to part with a 4th round pick. If 3 other clubs will give them a #4 but Angelo won’t, then they hang up on the Bears. If Jerry is dead-set that it’s too much to give, then fine, let it go.

I know what you are saying about there being a market. I don't think other execs are going to pay that price either especially with Porter out there. I have a feeling the 4th rounder is just a reporter doing his Bruce Levine impersonation.

They will get no more than a 5th for him.
