Benson carted off field with shoulder injury

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - The Bears offense lost one of its key components Friday night when Cedric Benson was carted off the practice field after hurting his left shoulder.

The second-year pro sustained the injury while being hit in rapid succession by Brian Urlacher and Mike Brown after catching a short pass from Rex Grossman during 11-on-11 drills.

Benson dropped the ball, went down to one knee, removed his helmet and grabbed his shoulder in pain. Surrounded by concerned teammates, he was treated on the field for about seven minutes before being driven to the locker room with his shoulder wrapped.

"Cedric Benson injured his shoulder," coach Lovie Smith said after the practice at Olivet Nazarene's Ward Field. "We'll get X-rays on it. That's about all we know is that."

The hits Benson absorbed were consistent with most during a padded practice and weren't overly aggressive or vicious. The injury occurred on such a seemingly ordinary play that even the two defenders who were involved couldn't explain what transpired.

"I don't know what happened," Urlacher said. "I just turned around and he was on the ground. That's all I saw."

"I really don't know what happened," Brown said. "I think after we all see it on film we'll know exactly what happened. I wish I had more info, but I don't."

With a strained hamstring sidelining veteran running back Thomas Jones since the start of training camp, Benson was thriving while practicing with the No. 1 offense.

"I would say that he's having an excellent camp like he had an excellent offseason," Smith said. "Hopefully we'll get him back out here before long. We went down tonight, but we'll see exactly how bad the injury is."

My opinion, after seeing the hit, it's just a pinched nerve. I'm no doc but play one on mesage boards.

After seeing the hit for myself, I now understand why Urlacher and Brown were being a little "stand-offish." It was a weak hit at best. Nas summed it up, apparently Benson is just a pussy. Although, at least he didn't get hurt during his physical...

Quick to question Benson's pain threshold, but Mark Prior gets a free pass in this town. That's funny.


I donno, you can't bag a guy because he got hurt. You don't know what he's feeling. After seeing the kind of abuse he's been taking so far this training camp, I don't thinnk I'd call him a pussy. He's taken every hit one of the toughest defenses in the NFL can dish out.

I'd wait to see what the docs and trainers say about the injury before jumping to any conclusions.

Something I think some people don't understand is that the human body -- even on a well-tuned athlete -- isn't always as resistant to injury as we think. Sometimes the seemingly most trivial and small hits can bust something up if you fall just the wrong way. The shoulder is an especially weak link. First hand experience: I fell down chasing a fly ball in the outfield and tore up my shoulder. A very innocent little stumble tore my shoulder (glenoid labrum) and put me out of action for 12 weeks. Does that make me a pussy too?

Do we know how long Benson's going to be out yet? Why is it taking so long to get a definitive diagnosis? Does he have too much swelling in his shoulder to get an accurate MRI reading?

Injuries seem to be piling up for the Bears, especially on the defensive line. Tank Johnson seems to be headed for the PUP list, and now Ian Scott is having arthroscopic knee surgery. Meanwhile, Alex Brown is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery that rendered him unable to lift weights for most of the past few months. Yikes!

My understanding is that they're calling it a sprain until he gets an MRI and other tests--at least that's what the Score was reporting for much of the weekend. I hope this doesn't turn into an eight-week injury or something like that.

Mully's article in the Sun-Times today reports that Benson's shoulder popped out of joint briefly and then slipped back in place. That's kind of scary. I'll be surprised if he's out for less than three weeks.

....Terence Metcalf is also out for a few weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery.

I dislocated my shoulder a few years ago and it still bothers me to this day. Even the toe that I dislocated bothered me for a year after injuring it. I guess recovery depends upon the extent of the dislocation. Looks like Benson's injury was comparatively minor, so hopefully he won't miss as much time as I think he may...

As a small child, I was struck in the middle of the street by a large man hauling ass on a 10-speed who happened to be eating a Chicago style hot dog at the time. No damage to my shoulder, but I was knocked out cold and there was relish, mustard, and ketchup (insert Chicago hot dog rule here if you please) all over the place. Needless to say, I was the butt of many hot dog jokes (insert Mike North comment here if you please) in the neighborhood for the rest of the summer.

As a small child, I once stuffed 35 grapes into my mouth at once and almost choked to death. Miraculously, I was able to play football with my neighborhood friends only hours later. I think this definitively proves Cedric Benson is a pussy.

Anyone else wondering if he gets better reception with those rabbit ears shoved up his ass?

I got my left shoulder "popped" out playing football. It strectched out the ligaments so much that if I simply raised my hand, my shoulder would pop out. Well, ten years and 3 surgeries later, my shoulder still pops out.

I have no real point other than that Benson is looking more Grossman-esque every day.

I once fell and scrapped my knee playing basketball. After a much needed band aid and some neosporen I was back out dunking on the other 11 yr old on my 7 foot rim.

I wish I could tell you this was all a fantasy, but you better believe it happened to me. I MANNED UP big time.
