Expanding on rpb's lead, if the Bears dangle Hester as trade bait, what does he bring you? Is he worth a #1 WR? A #2? 2 defensive players? What?

I'd be surprised if a team was willing to give up anything higher than a 5th round pick.

He had 4 touchdowns this year. I can't give up any value for that.

I think he's worth more than a 5th round pick. Only a couple punters in the NFL can get away with kicking to him. But the thing that hurts his value is there are now more return specialists than five years ago so there's less of a need.

There are other specialists, but which of them necessitates game-planning for?

I'd wager a third rounder, possibly a second, depending on the team.

4th rd pick.

Dont forget the team trading would have to take the contract.

A 4th rd pick has value.....if there is a new GM.

I also think teams would be concerned that they couldn't recreate the same type of return game. The Bears have been able to refine it over a few years and for some of those returns there are massive holes and Hester really only has to beat the kicker. Also, in terms of return men, he's really old.

If he could be a bigger part of the offense like Sproles he'd be worth a lot.

Well Patrick Peterson obviously. Other guys like DeSean Jackson would probably influence where a punt gets kicked also.

I do think the game planning done for Hester does kind of get overblown. Of course the special teams coach is worried about it but it's not like he doesn't do anything the other 15 games. Hester was great at effecting field position and could change momentum but one of the major reasons that teams were so concerned about him was that the offense wasn't that good. I'm pretty sure if Hester was on the Packers that they'd still be worried about Rodgers and his WR's more than special teams.

Teams could kick it away from Hester because they thought the defense could overcome the field position disadvantage.

The Bears aren't the only team to overvalue PR and KR...a team with a couple extra picks could gamble one on him and keep him on Special Teams 100% of the time.

2nd rd is out of the question

A really dumb Gm maybe would offer a 3rd

Meh, if you can convince me of the significance between the 64th overall pick and the 65th overall pick, I'll agree. If you can't, I stand by my statement.

Im judging off players traded for picks recently.

And there is a difference in those picks. Just the word second versus third matters to a gm

I was being genrous with 3. I think it's a 4.

I doubt we'll find out though. Bears will keep him.

I think you want more than a KR/PR out of a second rd pick though.

The Bears drafted Hester with the 57th overall round as a return specialist and nickel or dime back.

And?

They hoped to get a starting CB out of it.

They got a return guy. And that was a 21 year old Hester.

Look at recent trades for picks.

I'm fairly sure the Bears never projected Hester as a starting cornerback. If memory serves, he was going to be a nickel at best.

They had Tillman and Vasher at the time...and that was when they were at their best...they were "the guys." Ricky Manning Jr was the current nickel.

Devin Hester was drafted to replace Jerry Azumah, who was also a KR and backup CB.

I think they wanted a nickelback who would devolop into a CB

But again, that was 7 years and many miles ago.

But just for reference, Albert Haynesworth was traded for a 5th rd pick last year. Randy Moss was traded for a 4th rder a few years back.

But Kevin Kolb was moved for a 2nd rder (terrible trade) so I guess there is always hope.

Randy Moss was traded to Minnesota even more recently, for a third round pick.

However, Randy Moss and Albert Haynesworth are known as bad locker room guys...and both can be extremely lazy at times. Their reputations hurt them.

Devin Hester does not have this issue.

Right but Hester is not the best offensive or defensive player in the league like those guys were a year before the trade.

Personally, I would hope to get more out of a 2nd rd pick than a return guy...even the best return guy ever.

Also you have to take into consideration how easy it is to grab a return guy in the later rounds. Return guys are not hard to get.
