BOURBONNAIS -- Brian Urlacher missed his fourth consecutive practice Sunday and it’s looking unlikely that the veteran middle linebacker will play in the preseason opener Thursday against the Denver Broncos at Soldier Field.

After Sunday’s practice under sunny skies at Olivet Nazarene, coach Lovie Smith would not offer a timetable for when Urlacher will return to the field. He was last on the field Tuesday.

Urlacher was held out of the entire offseason program after he sprained his left knee in the season finale at Minnesota.

“His knee is still a little sore,” Smith said. “He has some soreness with it. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get him back out here before long. But we’ll take our time with Brian.”

That sounds a little less optimistic than Smith has been recently when discussing the Pro Bowl performer and leader of the defense. Smith was asked if the team would consider arthroscopic surgery for Urlacher to take a look at the knee.

“We’re on top of his knee,” he said. “When he’s ready to go, he’ll be back out there. That’s about all we’ll talk about.”

As usual, Smith said concern is natural any time a player is not on the field.

“There is always concern when you have an injury at the end of the year and you miss some time in the offseason but he should be OK,” he said. “It’s not like he really hurt it anymore. You assume -- I assume -- he would have some soreness and he would miss a few of these training camp practices.”
