If they are planning to draft a project QB in the later rounds and making Josh McCown the #2 by default then they are going down the same road Jerry Angelo did by ignoring the backup QB position. Emery has plugged up a lot of holes in the dike but one more at least is needed. A lot of backup QB's switching teams right now.

Agreed Jimmy. I don't even think they are sure if they're going to keep Cutler. Not enough picks to go around this year though.

Mc Cown has shown he can handle backup duties. Obviously you would want to upgrade. Nothing will happen until after the draft when even more QB get cut.

Yeah I think McCown has shown he can do every bit as good as a Campbell. And he will be a lot less money. I see no reason to go after anyone else. Use the money for other areas.

I agree. In fact, I think it's unwise for contenders to draft backup QBs, period. The Bears should draft players to complement the QB they already have. It would be different if the Bears were rebuilding, but drafting a backup QB does nothing to advance this season's realistic goal of winning a championship.

Yeah, I'm sure the top teams in the league are worried about their back up QBs... If Cutler goes down you're screwed regardless of who is back there.

Yep. Just get someone who can throw a football (see not Todd Collins) and hope Cutler can get back in time. McCown is fine...

Yes, but on the other hand, I thought it was a good move to spend the money they did to bring in Campbell. In that case, the thinking went, you have a guy who can do more than just keep Cutler's spot warm. I'm fine with money spend on a quality backup, just not a draft pick.

But all that proved last year was that Campbell sucked. Why waste the money on an expensive name? I dont think there is a difference between McCown and Campbell at this point.

Edit: I'll also add that a later draft pick is fine for a back up QB. Look at Green Bay with Flynn and New England with Cassel. YOu catch lightning in a bottle with a young backup and then you trade him before everyone realizes he actually sucks.

Being a vegan has to be a terrible life... In my world, a day without bacon is a day that I didnt get to live.

Campbell wasn't good either...not for $3M or whatever it was to get killed by SF 32-7.

They'll draft a QB. Highly doubt they sign another FA.

I'm sorry........is this a serious statement, veganfan?

And I don't think they would look at it as "drafting a backup"....more like "drafting Cutler's replacement".

Campbell did suck, but at the time, I thought it was wise to bring in a backup with starter talent and experience. Of course, if the Bears knew he would suck in his only chance, they probably would have went elsewhere. But the thinking was right. Ideally, the money is spent on a big name for the production he can offer when he's summoned to the field. The Bears were burned, but that doesn't invalidate the thought process that led to signing Campbell.

It's nice to draft QBs that you can later trade, I'll give you that. But I think those are more often the exception to the rule. For every Kirk Cousins or Matt Flynn, you have two Craig Krenzels or Nathan Enderlees.

Well sure, you are going to get a bum most of the time but that's true for most 4th rd and later picks. At least a QB has a better upside than another shitty S or LB.

If Jay Cutler were a piece of broccoli, would it be ok to back him up with...let's say...some melted cheese?

Lol. I didn't see your "bait," Krazy Ivan. Perhaps I haven't read your post yet. I'm actually not vegan only. My corny moniker has more to do with "fan-ness," than it has to do with diet...

It's all in jest though. I have love for everyone, meatball or not.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn't a vegan a vegan? Like, if you eat meat or dairy or soemthing, don't you cease to be a vegan....at least until you repent and start it up again?

I can never keep these dietary things straight....or myself, for that matter.

....wait....
