The new Bears LB, Shay Mac. I'll be very surprised if he isn't moved to LB.

Happy to hear this. There really was no point in keeping him around another year.

I'm glad this is over! The whole process has been impeding their progress in improving the team.

I'm glad he's gone, but I want to see him have a great year just to see the reaction from the meatballiest of meatball fans.

If he plays well, not great, elsewhere I have to question why it was done.

I would expect a LB signed ASAP and like it or not that LB will immediately be compared to 54, if he is better or not.

Some details from the Trib. A couple real gems in there...
Quote:
Urlacher’s agent originally approached the Bears seeking a two-year deal worth $11.5 million. The thought was to aim high initially and reach a middle ground through negotiations.

The Bears apparently wouldn't budge on their offer of a one-year contract worth a maximum value of $2 million.

"It wasn’t even an offer, it was an ultimatum," Urlacher told the Tribune. "I feel like I’m a decent football player still. It was insulting, somewhat of a slap in the face.

1 year 2 mill sounds pretty reasonable for his current ability. 5.75 mill a year is prime time money. I think BU's expectations were a bit... high.

from what SHAKE THAT was just saying, along with the 1 year 2 mil offer, the Beloved said "look. Go out and see what you can get, and bring any offers back to us" He didn't get another offer. There's no reason for the Bears to budge at that point. They aren't Jim Hendry negotiating against himself.

Have serious mixed feelings about this.

My head understands it is the best move for the Bears right now.

My heart does not like the fact of seeing the Bears play this year without #54 out there.

With that said, I don't think this is over yet. If he thinks he is going to get a lot of money from someone I think he is crazy and could very well come back around and take the Bears offer.

I love the fact that the Bears are standing firm on their offer of 1 yr

Right 54. You had no leverage in the negotiation. And are now saying in the media you would have taken 3 even though your agent wouldn't budge off of 2 at 11.5. So that's negotiation. Ok.

Dude wanted $11 million over two years?

Signed his own exit papers.

Not a stupid move. Linebackers are dime a dozen in the draft. Not a premium position that should be focused upon unless using a 3-4 defense.

Congrats Emery on finally not overpaying a UFA. Gotta start somewhere.

Just like Urlacher said he doesn't like Bears fans booing and he didn't care what Bears fans thought about Lovie, I'd say the same thing to him.

Don't want to hear you crying. Don't care what you think about how the Bears handled it. Yes, it was an ultimatum. So what? He acts like that's a bad thing. They needed an answer so they could have the ability to sign somebody else. How long was this suppose to go on? They gave him 8 days since free agency started. Obviously, nobody else wanted his dumb ass.

I understand the business end of it but football isn't just about business. Giving a HoF player another million dollars so he can finish out his career in the same uniform that he started it in would have done a lot to help the Bears image. Once again they stuck it to a player that has been loyal to the organization for virtually pennies. The moral of the team has to be at 0. One of the things you could say about a Lovie coached team is they never quit on him. I think this team may quit on Trestman before the season starts and it's very unfortunate. When you have proven that you can win SB titles you can run your organization like the Patriots but Emery or Trestman haven't won anything yet.

nas, it ain't like they didn't give him any kind of fair offer. They offered him $2 mil. More apparently, than he was worth on the open market.
I ain't buying what you're selling.

That low an offer is pretty much a slap in the face. They should have just said from the get-go that they didn't think he could play anymore. Dude is a jackass, but I suspect he is still better than any other options.

I've long since stopped caring about athletes. I only liked him cuz he played well. There really was nothing else to like about Urlacher. He was dumb and pretty much an ass hole. Bears treated him fine through the years. They extended him about 4 years ago when they didn't have to do it. He got some nice up front money because of it.

Right now, he's a below average player. So they offered him 2 million because of it. That's how it goes. Bears did nothing wrong.

That's like the veteran's minimum. They don't even have a replacement for him. He was asking for $5.5 and probably would have settled for $3M if they didn't say take it or leave it. HoFers are prideful guys. Giving a guy like him an ultimatum to take your only offer or walk isn't a smart move unless you've been successful like the Patriots. This is my opinion. It doesn't bother me that you have a different one.

This isn't 1st grade. Bears player are mad? Fuck them. If they quit on Trestmen it means they'll play bad and then they'll be out of the NFL and not get their millions. Everybody on the Bears will try hard cuz they want to stay in the NFL and make as much as they can. To suggest otherwise is stupid.

Ok. It wasn't supposed to bother you. It was just a conversation.

Anyway, football is different than other pro sports. Players get paid for what they can do today, not what they did in the past. I'm personally glad there's not a 5 million dollar albatross on this team like Soriano or something. Urlacher was not very good last year. We all saw that he was not even really close to his former ability. Then he even got hurt again. He ain't gonna be good this year. It's not like he wasn't rewarded for his play in the past. He was. He did very well.

I'd love to have him back, and $2 million sounds like a great price.

I think Emery is doing a great job. If you wanted Urlacher back for big money, perhaps Hendry would be a better GM for your tastes.
