I've read that Hakeem Nicks is on the trade market (last yr of contract on an 0-6 giants team), so with the Bears having a crumbling defense and an offense that's only going to get better with time, would you entertain giving up a ~3rd/4th round pick and/or a player to try and get hakeem nicks over here for the season?

with nicks you could run more 4 WR formations (marshall/alshon/nicks/earl-bennett) and with martellus bennett those are 5 capable receivers. it'd be a relatively steep price to pay for this year, but as we've found out in the NFL next year is never promised. the bears got all the way to teh NFC championship game in 2010, and i reckon they would have had a very solid chance to do that in 2011 if cutler doesn't get hurt after the best bears game of the last decade, that inspirational win over the chargers @ soldier field.

can you imagine a threesome of marshall/alshon/nicks terrorizing defenses? pick your poison, but all three of them can and will burn you and put up 100+ yds and multiple touchdowns if you let them. considering that this turnovers or turnstiles defense hearkens the sage words of bart scott in that they can't stop a nosebleed, so if you have a chance to burn a decent draft pick and get a bonafide WR in here to add to the mix, well shit, maximize what you got say "we're going balls out offense and we're going to outscore you" and take your chances and show a giant brazen pair of tresticles that will be bronzed if you win another superbowl in this town.

what thinkest y'all? all you have to do is make the tournament. and the bears have a solid ~50-60% chance of making the tournament this year, and if the bears got in the tournament this year their chances of winning a superbowl would be maximized if you go from having a nonexistant marquess wilson as your WR4 to having hakeem nicks/earl bennett as your WR4.

what? would you rather have a 3WR set of marshall/jeffery/earl or marshall/jeffery/knicks (lol i got ny on my mind, obviously *nicks). how many 4WR formations have you seen this year? exactly. i'd like to see them.

if i were a BASIC compiler my response to you would be SYNTAX ERROR

btw i just realized the hilarity of the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS having a WR named (k)nicks. it's the kind of synergy that brings you the NY/C second tier of sports, the jets mets and nets!

In general, I think it would be awesome to add him. But I would prefer to save any resources for potential defensive improvements if anything pops up. Byrd, for example.

+1

Considering how well Jeffery has played, Nicks is a luxury. Plus his catch rate is for shit and he's hurt all the time.

Not that I disagree on Jeffery, but I think Arkush and others have a point when they say the Bears still don't have enough weapons. The bulk of the load is carried by only four players - Forte, Marshall, M. Bennett, and Jeffery - and it would do much to add another proven weapon to the current stable. That being said, I don't think Nicks to the Bears can or will happen during this season, but they still need another threat at WR, and/or another TE, to give the QB more options.

IMHO, hub's consistently been on point when he reminds us that the bears have yet to run a single 4 or 5WR formation yet this season. marquess wilson has been effectively/redshirted and he hasn't sniffed the field beyond his possible involvement in special teams (i pay attention but not THAT closely). idk if the kid's some sort of a bust and they think he'd embarass himself and jeopardize the team if he's out there.... or maybe he's learning how to block cuz i reckon he wasn't necessarily a bigtime blocker up in washington/state so like, until he's proven to them that he can run/block they won't put him out there cuz you'd essentially be tipping your hand to your opponents by saying "the kid's in so we're gonna chuck it"

the biggest impediment to getting nicks would be that the giants are still only 3 games back from the division lead at 0-6. dallas outslugged the listless redskins to get up to 3-3, otherwise a redskins victory would have had them leading the division at 2-3 and only 2.5 games ahead of your new york football giants.

methinks the giants would have to lose another game and get to 4 back in the division b4 they consider it, cuz methinks the trade deadline is coming within the next week or two, so there might not be enough time to let them tank.

the reason i'd kick the tires on it would be because nicks has an expiring contract this season, so if the giants are willing to concede the season and potentially concede their inability to sign nicks to an extension (as i reckon he'd want to test the open market b4 resigning there if that's what he wants to do) then they midaswell take whatever they can get for him and then if they truly want him back that badly they'd have to pay market price anyways, so go resign him if that's what you want. again, if the giants could get a ~3rd/4th round pick and/or a player, yeah, it's a steep price to pay.... but as both hub and veganfan21 pointed out, *hub-chuckle* guys i've been telling you every week that the bears don't have enough depth at WR to run 4 and 5WR formations, which could be a key component of this offense.

* adjusts tinfoil hat *

maybe there's a conspiracy going on..... maybe king tresticles (pronounced trest-uh-clees liek the roman emperor that he is) figured that he'll coach up marquess into a solid blocking WR, drill him over and over with the playbook, and quietly develop his game in practice and then when it's ready to go he'll just do a little hub-chuckle and pull the brim of his hat down and commit to keeping a secret weapon for later in the season, if not the playoffs. unless the kid is a total bust (imma try to do some research on that subject after this pot) you figure he's gotta be able to run at least ~2-3 plays that utilize his primary attributes as a WR, so if he's an unfinished product then maybe, just maybe, trestman is truly a mad scientist super genius like martz was purported to be, and taht would mean that maybe, just maybe.....

i can see it now>>>

first day of the playoffs in the wild card round the bears get the ball on their first possession and right out of the chute line up in a 4WR formation and teh opposing is all "WTF? the bears don't do this" and then they #UnleashQuess and send him on a deep post route which gets him open streaking diagonally across the middle of the field, inviting a laserbeam throw from jay "our quarterback" cutler and BOOM, just like the opening servo in that enthralling playoff game against the 7-9 seachickens (en route to the NFC championship game), the bears will come out and stomp their opponents into submission, because these ain't your older brother's bears. this aint no lovie smith regime.

THIS IS THE MARC TRESTMAN **ERA** AND YOU ARE PRIVILEGED TO MERELY BE #WITNESS TO IT. ALL HAIL THE MAN WITH A BRONZE SET OF GIANT THROBBING PULSATING TRESTICLES JUST OVERFLOWING WITH THE LEVELS OF TESTOSTERONE REQUISITE FOR GOING OUT THERE AND DECIDING THAT 4TH AND 2 FROM THE 9YD LINE IS NOT A MANDATORY FG SITUATION, EVEN THOUGH YOU COULD SAVE YOURSELF ALL KINDS OF HASSLE LATER ON BY PUTTING YOURSELF UP 2+ POSSESSION AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. * POUNDS TABLE * SHOMER SHABBOS!

ALSO, CAPS.

The Bears need help on defense, not offense. I love Nicks, but it doesn't matter who the #3 WR is on any team.

Wilson is a seventh round pick, I think, so if he doesn't become a reliable player here I don't think he'd necessarily be a "bust". It'd be nice to add another WR but I could see them doing that next year in the FA market as well. As much as I want Nicks, I don't think he'd get the money he's looking for in Chicago. You could rent him at the cost of a pick, but I'm not sure it's worth it.
