I think this may be good for the Bears. Cutler will not cost as much next season and if all doesn't go well the Bears will get a really good draft pick. Why not take a look at Vince Young? He did play with the Packers.

  These guys won't be here next season anyway. When you're trying to salvage the season you may as well take a chance. He's definitely better than Palmer.

Is the 6-8 weeks speculation on your part Nas or has it been reported?

Speculation based on some of the reports. Two weeks is usually the low end for a mild groin strain.

Nope, sorry.

I am all for taking chances on other positions with guys that dont have it together mentally, but the fear is that he has some good games when it doesnt matter and they actually talk themselves into thinking he is the QB of the future.

They will sign cutler for $15 mill a year 5 years, $40 mill guaranteed with another $5 mill play in incentives.

Its not the PER YEAR, its Guaranteed money, that will be the sticking point. Who cares if you give him $17 Mill a year, as you can cut the player.

Basically you are paying Jay for 3 more years for sure. The biggest difference is how you spread the money for cap purposes

Agree with Nas, this could be a blessing in disguise.

I thought the plan was to franchise Cutler the next few years?

Franchising Cutler for next season makes sense if you're keeping Marshall around for the final year of his deal.
Marshall's barely containable with Cutler here to help keep him in check. Marshall without Cutler would probably not be something
the Bears wanna try.

As many as 9 QB's estimated to be going in the first round in the 2014 draft.

Franchising Cutler would be foolish. Offer him $10M a year and if he says no then waive goodbye. After another injury he will be lucky to get that.

All better options than Jordan Palmer.

Just for extra clarification, the 6-8 weeks things is a complete guess. Not a real timetable, at least yet.

Correct. Sources say it may just be a yeast infection. I thought it was a hip injury.

If the Bears win at least two or three more games this season, which looks possible with the Vikings, Rams and Browns on the schedule, they probably would be middle of the pack for draft choice. Is there a good QB available with the 12-18th pick. If so, don't franchise him and roll the dice.

I don't believe we can speak of "winnable" games after the type of performance they put on in DC. Rather the Bears are a winnable game for most other teams

If you don't have a chance to win that may be best. Top picks get paid nothing nowadays.

You are probably right, but they should beat the Rams without Bradford and the Browns.

Winning those first few games looks to be a downer now. Could have gotten better draft position to help rebuild this craptastic defense.

I don't think the Bears would win @Cleveland in December even with Cutler.

Wins: Lions, Ravens, @Rams, @Vikes,
Losses: @Pack, Cowboys,
Close calls: @Browns, @Eagles, Packers.

9 Nov 4 7:40PMCST + AT Packers
10 Nov 10 12:00PMCST ) Lions
11 Nov 17 12:00PMCST * Ravens
12 Nov 24 12:00PMCST ) AT Rams
13 Dec 1 12:00PMCST ) AT Vikings
14 Dec 9 7:40PMCST + Cowboys
15 Dec 15 12:00PMCST ) AT Browns
16 Dec 22 12:00PMCST ) AT Eagles
17 Dec 29 12:00PMCST ) Packers

They scored 41 points today. That's better than last year. Turned it around!

I dont think it was ever the plan. Guys already making $15 mill are not looking to be franchised.

Giving him that Tag would do nothing for the team except piss him off.

But this really changes everything.

Ok, don't know but just remembered hearing it several times on M&H. It will piss him off, but he hasn't proved he is worth a top 10 QB contract.

Yeah you'd hate to piss off a guy by throwing 15 million at him for a year. whats he going to do, play better ?

It better not make him mad. If Drew Brees can get the tag so can Jay Cutler.

The thing about Cutler is he is in no position to pout. He's pretty close to being Carson Palmer or even worse having to go some place as a backup.

At this point, it's hard to come up with a team besides Philadelphia that would be interested in making him the starter and I'm not sure he is a good fit there. Minnesota was an option before but you'd have to imagine that Josh Freeman and a rookie is how they will move forward.

The market for Cutler is drying up fast, and if McCown proves effective it pretty much ends the "Cutler was just starting to come into his own" theory.

Yeah, Cutler is in no position to scoff at the franchise tag. He'll be lucky to get it.

Why do you all seriously believe the Bears should use the Franchise Tag on Cutler? He may not be a $20M QB for 2 years and you want he to get that type of money for 1. With all of these injuries and mediocre play I think an incentive laden contract is the best he should get. Start it around $8M. Let him walk if it doesn't work.
