Anyone have a serious technological answer for this?

Yes, it is being operated by a 23 year old kid making $11 an hour.

That's a guess, but I am being serious.

I assume it's because they have to try to estimate 10 yards from the sticks. They can place the line wherever they want, but can't get an exact measurement on every play.

That, and they have to give the disclaimer that it's not official or else some yahoo would probably try to sue them for misleading the audience or some crap like that.

How come these refs cant get calls right? I can see it at full speed, but they review it in slow motion, and still get a bunch of calls wrong.

Another serious football question stemming off of the original post...

But where exactly does the 10 yards start? I mean, does it start from the nose of the football or the middle of the football?

The Nose

Does anyone else feel uneasy about the refs' judgement involved in ball placement every time before they bring out "sticks" to measure for first down?

It could be the most important, most potentially inaccurate process in the game.

It's called ChampionChip. They would just need to embed them into the balls and integrate the data from equipment that tracks the chip into instant replay machinery. So, at the moment the player is considered down (knee on the ground) the replay screen shows the exact coordinates of the ball on the field.

It would still be up to the ref to put the ball on the field. Without puting technology into the field itself, the process is still open to judgement calls.

And frankly, that is the way it should remain. Taking judgement out of the game would be taking the very essence of what makes the game of football so great to begin with.

I feel the same way about the whole Q-TEC strike zone in baseball.

I'd say it's a good guess, considering the former MJH intern "Baby Urlacher" was working in the truck for a while there.
