If Peppers cap hit this year is $9M, even if he is cut, why not offer him $9M this year?

OR?

If he gets picked up by anyone, does that mitigate the bears cap hit? So, if someone pays him $3M? then the cap hit is $6M?

I imagine there is some rule about cutting him and resigning him as a way around cap. Otherwise, everyone would do this. As I understand the only way to do it is to actually delay it by extending him or something.

If they wait until June then they can spread it over two years per SI.

That is if he agrees to a 2 year deal. he is owed $18 Mill this season on his current contract with a $9 Mill cap hit.

if he went on to the open market, he is a $5 Mill guy?

If there wasnt the $9M cap hit, he would be cut right now.

Biggie, here's an ESPN reporter citing the same spread of the cap hit...

Michael C. Wright, ESPN wrote:
But if the Bears opted to cut Peppers and use the post-June 1 designation (which allows a team to spread out the cap hit over two years), it would result in dead money of $4.183 million in 2014 and $4.183 million in 2015. Considering Peppers’ cap charges over those two years are $18.183 million and $20.683 million, the dead money would still result in savings in 2014 and 2015 of approximately $14 million and $16 million.

Did you watch him last season repeatedly getting annihilated by no name players nearly every week? $14 Million for that? Not anymore.

The only caveat would be if there is an injury that was being kept secret.

One DE is now a linebacker, who knows what you will get out of Melton, and you're ready just to say bye bye to Peppers? I agree he is not worth anywhere near $14mil, but I don't know if the Bears can just cut him. They need lots of help on that defense, and Peppers might still have a little bit left in the tank.

That is a fair point Frank. Also, keep in mind free agency and the draft happen before June 1.
