So says NFL Network. 9th best RB. Forte not too happy. Is it accurate?

I haven't seen the list but I'm pretty sure there's not 8 RBs better than him.

That's probably about right. There are 32 NFL teams. That puts him as about the 3rd best player per team.

That was my initial thought.

But if it motivates Forte in the offseason, great.

91 is probably a little low, but he is not a top 20 or 30 player either. I thought about the top 3 per team as well, but then there are teams like the Jaguars, Browns, Raiders, and Packers who don't have 3 players better than Forte.

I think it's accurate. Since it's the entire league, you have to factor in each unquestioned star at every position on every team. As for RB, you know he's going to rank behind McCoy, Peterson, Charles, Lynch, and maybe Foster (I know he had a bad year), which means he's going to fight it out with guys like L. Bell, Bush, Lacey, Doug Martin, Rice, Gore, Ridley, Murray, etc. Nine would seem off if my list was conclusive, but not by much imo.

He's a top 4 running back and you couldn't make a convincing argument that would put him worse than 5th. He's the Bears best player. That should put him somewhere in the top 30 or 40.

Particularly when considering what awful fucking offensive lines and one-dimensional offenses he's been running behind (last year excluded, of course).

I agree for the most part but I would argue that they weren't good at run blocking last year. There are only 1 or 2 running backs that have been as productive as him. I would love to see him behind a great offensive line but his best days are probably behind him.

Just don't ask him to convert a 3rd or 4th and short or gain anything after contact

Nas we share a lot of the same Bears thoughts but this is not as clear cut as you might think. Marshall at least and maybe one other merits some debate.

Well since they let McCown go, he may be their best.

32 teams x 54 players active? is 1,728. 91 puts him just shy of the top 5%. He fits but again it can be debated here or there.

No but at least it wasn't a different line last year, and teams were actually on the field expecting pass plays rather than laughing, lining up 8 and 9 in the box, and saying 'good luck'.

Fun with numbers!

It took a little while for me to find the voting methodology, but it looks like the way the poll is constructed has a lot to do with the complaints.

First, the players do vote, but are not required to. Only 25-30% of players actually turn in ballots.

More importantly, each player is asked to list only his Top 20. His #1 player gets 20 points, his #2 player gets 19 points, and so on, with his #20 player getting 1 point. The points from all ballots are then tallied to get the "Top 100."

In theory, if every player in the league thought Forte was the 21st best player in the NFL, he would get zero votes. So in Forte's case, he should probably look at it positively...he was listed on some ballots as being one of the Top 20 players in the NFL. (Though it's possible/likely that many of those ballots came from other Bears.)

It changes year to year with running backs. In 2012 there were 9 RB's who had more yds from scrimmage per game.

Last year he was top 5

He played most of the season with a high ankle injury. IIRC he has the most yards from scrimmage for a RB since 2008 or he is #2.

Forte is a good, solid back. I like him, but he certainly has his faults, too. He's bad on short yardage and he's a hit-or-miss back. He can break off big runs, and he's good in the open field, but he struggles to get yards if there's not a lot of room, and so his runs seem to typically be either nothing or a lot. It ends up in a lot of 2nd and 3rd and long situations. I think 91st is just about right.

I didn't look at the list, but how far ahead of Cutler is McCown?

You don't have the consistency he's had being a boom or bust running back. Especially considering how awful the offensive line has been and the lack of continuity.

The Lions had a guy named Barry Sanders that some called "boom or bust". Forte has been an elite RB since he stepped on the field. He has been a quality RB longer than some others that might be rated higher.

Call me crazy jimmy but I don't call running backs who can't move a pile , make a first defender miss, break an arm tackle , or can't be depended on to put his down and grind out a third and one when you need him to , elite.

He doesn't have elite speed so how did he gain all of those yards facing 8 -10 guys in the box his entire career?

I agree that he's been a quality back for a long time. Just not elite.
