With hockey out of the way, we only have to wait 53 more days until the start of Bears training camp. Let's fill the void left by the loss of the Hawks with a return back to Chicago's team.

Has Shea McClellin been moved to safety yet?

God's work being done by Rick.

I don't think Roberto Garza should even be a starter. Give La Puente 1st team reps and be done with the charade.

The other scary part is we are now overdue for Brandon Marshall "issues".

The fact he got paid should help though.

There should be progress on having the defense get back to basic fundamentals, such as being in the right spot, running to the ball carrier on every play, even after a tackle, and so on. I hope they work on that this summer.

Even if the offense does well, it won't show up in the standings if Tucker doesn't get serious about his job.

They need to bring back the Lovie rule of always picking up a loose ball. Ya never know when it will be ruled a fumble...

Yup. That's something that should be a staple of every defense. That the Bears seemed to get away from it last year doesn't reflect well on Tucker's attention to detail. Well, that and serving as every opposing RB's practice squad defense doesn't do much for his reputation anyway I guess.

I do find it interesting that much of the optimism is "If the defense gets better, and the offense stays the same then they should be good". I think it's much more likely the offense regresses rather than the defense gets to the point of being acceptable.

Its going to be so refreshing to Bears management when the backup sucks

If Jordan Palmer wants to stay in Chicago, he better not perform well if given the chance.

If there is one week where McCown plays well and Cutler throws like 3 interceptions we'll have a funny radio week.

I could see that happening. Natural result of losing a QB who excelled in the system Trestman runs.

It really is the perfect situation either way for Cutler haters.

It's either:
Did you see how bad McCown sucked in Tampa Bay, and he was better than Cutler!
Did you see how good McCown was in Tampa Bay, and they let him go and kept Cutler!

Cutler basically has to be Peyton Manning next year.

It's funny that Emery is being celebrated for Tucker-proofing the defense. Plugging in veterans to correct your drafting and hiring mistakes is a weird thing to be happy about.

Why would the offense regress in a year that generally finds progression for a system.

On defense, I think you are seriously underestimating how much better today they are against the run then they were since the Washington game of last year.

I was shocked to see the guy is 30. I would have guessed he is about 26 with the amount of time he has seen the field in the NFL.

There isn't much room to improve though at least statistically. I still find it very hard to believe that they were the second best offense in football last year.

They could be better and still be bad.

Even if the offense stays the same, I disagree with the statement that if the defense is just average, they are Super Bowl contenders. The offense was good last year, but there were better offenses out there... and not just one (except when McCown was QB - during that run, they were elite). The defense needs to be better than just "average" for them to compete, IMO. Seattle and San Francisco have smothering offenses, and I could argue that their offenses are more adaptable than ours (even if they don't put up the sheer yards).

Regarding the bolded part, keep in mind that McCown's time as starting QB skewed the statistics. :D

I also find it hard to believe that they were statistically the 2nd best offense. They weren't the 2nd best offense in the NFL. They were top ten and maybe... MAYBE top 5.

Yeah. I guess to put it another way. I think the offensive power was overrated and those who think the offense will carry us to the promised land are probably in line for disappointment.

The defense is still filled with guys who are old and declining. I mean, when your defense is getting old, and one of your answers is Jared Allen, you may be in trouble.

The offense had a lot of garbage time production. It should be concerning that games that Cutler is required to do more than game manage they lose.

Wake me up when the 3rd preseason game rolls around. Until then I will be watching an MVP candidate hitting HRs on the Southside 8)

supposedly trestman kept that going.... after the GB game the players and trestman said they practice it... oh well.

the bears are putting a lot of faith in DJ williams and lance briggs being able to stay healthy... which is pretty stupid given how both players are on the wrong side of 30. the LB's behind them are awful, i think the season as it stands right now is depandant on the play of those LB's

By Dan Wiederer, Tribune reporter
3:00 p.m. CDT, June 3, 2014

The Chicago Bears added more depth and competition to their receiving corps Tuesday with the signings of receivers Armanti Edwards and Michael Spurlock.

The team finished another session of organized team activities Tuesday with nine receivers on the 90-man roster. But that number included Domenik Hixon, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament and won’t be with the team in 2014 after receiving an injury settlement.

Edwards, a former college quarterback at Appalachian State, entered the NFL in 2010 as a third-round draft pick. He spent the 2010-12 seasons with the Carolina Panthers and split time last year with the Panthers and Cleveland Browns.

Edwards has six career catches for 131 yards and also has experience as a return specialist.

Spurlock is a 31-year-old journeyman whose seven NFL seasons have included stints with seven different teams. His best season was a 17-catch, 250-yard, two-TD campaign in 2010 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Spurlock finished last season with the Detroit Lions.

The Bears' depth chart at receiver is solidified at the top with Pro Bowlers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. Marquess Wilson looks to be the frontrunner for the team's No. 3 receiver job with competition coming from Josh Morgan and Chris Williams.

Other receivers on the current roster include Eric Weems, Josh Bellamy and Terrence Tolliver.

The Bears also waived linebacker Tana Patrick on Tuesday.

Besides, obviously QB fill in the blank:

If BLANK goes down, the Bears will fall like a house of cards.

My Blank is either WR.

Whoever wins will probably have to be judged against last year's second best QB performer...
