3rd and 1.

end of the 3rd and down big, instead of trying to squeeze an extra play in, just take it to the 4th

I have no idea what's going on with his play calling. It's like he just pulls a play out of a hat and uses it. Too many great weapons on offense for all the 3 yard passes. The screens are too predictable.

I agree. There have been a number of things this season that have me shaking my head. And I'm just a fatso fan who sits on the couch and watches.

These are all just from the FIRST HALF yesterday; Fuller covering kicks, the 3rd & 1 play gd mentioned, sitting on the ball going into the half yesterday with all 3 timeouts and a minute left, Jordan Mills continuing to start while Ola and Dela Puente out played him. There are more for sure.

Cutler was terrible yesterday for the most part, but he had plenty of company. Ratliff, Forte, and the punter were the only ones who showed up to play. Trestman and this entire coaching staff needs to start taking some heat. They have been pretty bad all season, with the exception of a few decent performances from Tucker's guys.

I know Jerry Rice's comments were brought up when Trestman was hired, but they seem to be more pertinent than ever in light of all this criticism of the weird playcalling that emphasizes short routes:

Quote:
Not that Rice, who holds every major receiving record in NFL history, hated Trestman. It's just he hated the things Trestman made him do:

Run 2-yard crossing routes.

Take a physical beating.

And eventually, even consider retirement.

''That was a nightmare for me,'' said Rice, who caught 108 passes last season, but for ''only'' eight touchdowns and 1,254 yards, an 11.6-yards-per-reception average, 4 yards below his career average.

Those feelings went away withTrestman, and the hiring of new head coach Steve Mariucci, who replaced George Seifert.

''I caught a lot of balls, but it was not a fun year for me,'' said Rice, the NFL's all-time leader in touchdowns, yards receiving and career receptions, who is expected to play extensively in the first half tomorrow night when the Jaguars play the 49ers at 3Com Park in San Francisco in a preseason game. ''I had some doubts in my mind. I was saying, 'Jerry, you've been here for a long time. Maybe it's time to leave, move on.' ''

The main problem was how Trestman used Rice, as a possession receiver, an inexplicable tactic for one of the NFL's top deep threats. Trestman's explanation was the 49ers' running game was suspect, and he needed Rice for first downs in what had become a possession offense.

The strategy worked enough to get the 49ers to the playoffs, but the result was an unhappy Rice, who was so weary by season's end that in one critical goal-line situation against Carolina, he had to leave the field. Quarterback Steve Young threw into triple coverage to rookie Terrell Owens, and the pass was intercepted, killing any chance of a comeback.

In six of the last nine games, Rice averaged under 10 yards a catch. His three 100-yard games and eight touchdowns both were the lowest totals since his rookie year, and, for the first time in his career, he didn't have a catch as long as 40 yards.

''I'm used to stretching downfield, making the big plays,'' Rice said. ''After you get the defense off you, you've got the underneath routes, and that's something we didn't do. I took a lot of blows, and I took a beating.

''I was very depressed, because we didn't really attack people.
We didn't run that 49er offense. Not saying anything against Marc Trestman, but it was not enjoyable.''

Marriuci said this won't be a problem. In Mariucci's offense, instead of lining up strictly as a flanker, Rice will be moved around to different spots, especially in three- and four-wideout sets, so defenses can't key on him so easily. The 49ers also will throw to him downfield more often.

He and Emery need to go. There is no reason for confidence in either one of them.

Or just call a TO to force them to punt.

I still can't figure out why Philbin ended up punting that or even calling timeout with :08 left to run one play to get into FG position. Even if they didn't get it, the Bears would only be able to run 1 play at most from their own 40.

Thats what I meant. Ratliff gets the sack to knock them out of FG range. At that point there was about a minute left. Call timeout, get the punt with 45-50 seconds left. Even if the dolphins pin the Bears deep, still have two timeouts and Really.Big.Receivers. to work with. Big play, penalty, anything can happen. No reason to just take the punt and walk into the locker room with your tail between your legs.

If nothing else, maybe the boos are a bit quieter and Kyle Long doesn't start crying like a little girl.

Miller just reminded me on that bubble screen lateral, too.

They just screwed that up last week or the week before. How do you make the same damn mistake again? That can't be a lateral. That's on Cutler, too, but they obviously didn't drill it into him to get that right.

BINGO! The guy is an accountant! The only reason he is the President of this team is because the owners are such social misfits that Teddy was made President to go have the necessary meetings with
Jerry to get ISFA/State funding for the new facility. But I am sure the fact he was made President so Mike Mccaskey didnt need to meet with Jerry has nothing to do with someones theory around here.

Maybe George McCaskey is different in the way he runs this team, maybe he socializes with other NFL people not named Mara , but if you don't meet and talk to people in the NFl, then how the hell do you have any sense of what a good GM, a good President or even have a clue at how a great organization runs??????

This is the fucking Chicago Bears ....a $2 Bill entity with no debt....and thats a low estimate in Value that by all accounts....and here they are played on a rented field with chunks of sod flying up in th4e smallest stadium in the NFL.....this alone should be an example of how the people who own this team run it.

They also passed on Bruce Arians for Trestman, which is clearly a mistake, and also passed on the Seattle OC who is likely better than him too.

They actually thought they had outsmarted the league by being the team that was willing to give him a chance. It's pretty clear that the buzzwords of Trestman worked much more than he does as a coach.

He wasn't the one who called that play. It wasn't going to go anywhere even if it was completed.

Remember when people would get pissed off at Lovie for calling a timeout, then challenging plays because it seemed like he never learned his lesson and continued to fuck it up? Its the same thing with Trestman and dumb playcalling week after week after week. Sure the players have to execute, but the coach seems to put them in a position to fail a lot as well.

Yeah, I didn't understand what they were doing either at the end of the half. Even if they had no intention of running a play after a punt from Miami, I would have at least called a timeout, and sent the house for a blocked punt attempt. Maybe it's a success, and they could have gotten a FG before halftime. If it fails, then you just take a knee and go into halftime.

The virus begins and ends with the McCaskey clan.

I'm still waiting for the yachting accident.

They don't give a shit about winning, just filling the coffers.

I find it very amusing and depressing that a small market team to the North is a dominant force while the giant market Bears are a perennial also-ran.

But you need to blame the person/people who promoted him, who keep him, who allow him to do everything he does...the guy has a job for life after getting the stadium deal and he knows it.

Fair point, but it makes things a lot easier for them when they have had one of the best QBs in the game/of all time taking 90+% of their snaps over the last 22 years.
