Let's rewind a little bit.

Jerry Angelo is fired.
A year later, Lovie Smith is fired.

Most teams would say "Hey, we fired our GM, and then our coach. Maybe things aren't going so well and we need to rebuild". Instead, the Bears continued to sign veterans and take a "This year is our year" type of attitude. It didn't work.
They then double down on signing older players, and it didn't work.

Then, Emery and Trestman are fired, and the Bears are in a worse position than they were when they fired Lovie Smith, and what do the Bears do? They go for it again.

This leads me to the point of the thread. The Bears ultimate decision makers are either too stubborn or too stupid to understand that the Bears are in a cycle of perpetual mediocrity. This offseason would have been the perfect time to take a step back and realize that there is a reason that you fired your coach and your GM.

The Bears need a four win season to figure this out. The post Lovie Smith era has been a disaster but not the good kind of disaster that gives you hope for the future. There are very few players on this team you can point to as being quality building blocks for the next few years. That is why we are hoping for Shea McClellin's "leadership" improvement and excited about a promising looking rookie running back in a league where running backs come and go all the time.

All any win does this year is make it more likely that the Bears go one more year extending the Lovie Smith era.

Seems they would have been better off keeping Lovie for one last year and then starting all over. Probably would have made the playoffs in 2013 without Trestman being dumb.

You'd think so, but they were given that exact same circumstances(with the team in worse shape than Lovie left them) and they choose to hire an older coach and make strange free agent moves.

I'd have to re read notes from the day but I thought Trestman had originally interviewed to be Lovie's DC. I think that would have worked out for both of them.

Signing Cutler to that ridiculous extension kind of sealed their current fate. Had they let him walk, they could have started the rebuild right then and there.

My motto this year will be apathy. Instead of keeping Sundays organized around the beloved, I'm not even going to be in town for the first three Sundays. By then we'll know more about what they are, and if they start 0-3 then I can just ignore the rest of the season.

I think it is hilarious that the word coming out of Bears camp, if you believe the radio hosts who discuss it, is that this is a "development year".

I just wish they had realized that in February or pretty much any time after that.

I'm on board but I don't watch college football. Is there a clear #1 pick for next year yet?

You think this can all be fixed in one season? It will take a couple years of losing to change this roster around.

It can be fixed that quickly. The only issue for next season is they still take a big cap hit if they get rid of Cutler.

They basically need one year without him. They could very well be good by year two.

Cutler isn't the main issue with the team. It is a lack of overall talent on the roster from a series of bad drafts. It will take a series of good drafts to turn this around. 5 years sounds about right IF they start the rebuild now. If they try to win for the next couple years we are doomed to failure.

There is no need for a 5 year rebuild in the NFL.

Cutler as a player isn't the main issue with the team. Cutler with his contract is. They'll get a high draft pick next year, hopefully get rid of him and probably suck next year as that salary cap number gets flushed out, and be fine.
