After the field conditions on Sunday, I think it is time to ask why Field Turf has not been installed at Soldier Field. HIGH SCHOOLS across the suburbs have been installing it for the last 5 years, and several state universities have it. It is by far cheaper to maintain and hold up to abuse. I know the Chicago Park District is pretty protective of the facility, but it is pretty embarassing to see a 15 year NFL Vet bite it while trying to kick an extra point, even if it was Jason Hanson. It can be installed for about 750,000 dollars and can be done quickly. The Patriots did it in like 10 days a few years ago. If District 211 can do it, why can't the Bears?

Get some competent people to take care of the grass field, and then you won't need field turf.

It's not like there are a whole lot of activites going on at Soldier Field other than Bears games. And personally there is something about field turf that I just don't like.

With the Chicago Fire moving 2 years ago to TOYOTA Park in Bridgeview, there aren't as many events at Soldier Field besides the Bears, and I believe under the terms of the team's current lease, there can't be ANY events of any kind within 48 hours of a Bears' home game. A case in point happened in the mid '90s where Soldier Field played host to the "Chicago Football Classic" in a driving rainstorm on a Saturday night, and then the Bears & Saints played on a field better suited for AVP Beach Volleyball than NFL football... I know that Soldier Field has occasional International Soccer matches, and Kenny Chesney performed live in that stadium...earlier this summer.

FieldTurf ain't so great. Either maintain the grass well or go for some sort of shitty field gamesmanship. I like the natural surface. Looks better to see chunks of sod flying than rubber crumbs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when our Bears played one forgettable season in 2002 at the University of Illinois' Memorial Stadium, didn't they play on a variation of FieldTurf called AstroPlay? :? It's the same surface the Tampa Bay Rays play on down at Tropicana Field, and I read a story that AstroPlay is an inferior version of the stuff they've got at so many football stadiums in both college & the NFL.

Field turf also does NOT stop the onset of aging. Think about that

Field Turf also does not protect against STD's.

Yet another reason why Briggs and Urlacher would be against it.

If you experience an erection lasting longer than 4 hours while using Field Turf, send some to the rest of us.

Field Turf faces a nearly impossible challenge: 2 wars, a bad economy, a planet being destroyed, and huge national debt.

Field Turf's ankle injury is not as bad as first thought. It still hopes to play this week - which is causing Jeff Fisher and Albert Haynesworth to go into hysterics, I'm sure.

Field Turf was picked up for beating a woman for the 5th time in the last year. Chris Mortenson reports that Roger Goodell will come down harshly on field turf with an 8 game suspension.

I have been playing softball on field turf for a few years (in winter) in Schaumburg in the dome there. It's great, except for all the little bits of rubber get stuck in your uniform if you slide. They come falling out later, in far greater numbers than expected when changing. But for running and cutting on, it's a great surface-well, except for some nasty abrasions you can get to exposed skin when sliding (insert chosen line here). They should have gone to it years ago. It's nothing like the old astroturf. I doubt you would find many players who have any problem with this surface. Whereas many have complaints about the current surface at Soldier Field, that all too often consists of large patches of green (painted) mud and divots everywhere.

However, field turf is being investigated as being a performance enhancing substance...
