Out signing autographs on Daley Plaza yesterday. My wife was like what a freak and I had to explain the whole Svengoolie idea.

He's a Chicago original, and after all these years, he's as hilarious as ever! I've been a "Svengoolie" fan since he was on 32 before FOX bought WFLD in 1986, and followed him over to WCIU 26 in 1995 when they became "The U". Viewers might have gotten sick & tired of the constantly repeated classic monster movies from the Universal archives, but "Sven" has 2 trips to the "TV Graveyard" & WCIU has just signed a deal to carry monster-themed classics from Sony/Columbia Pictures, starting next month. That's according to his blog on the WCIU Web site.

That's cool. I'm glad he'll get more movies to show. I also miss "Sven-surround" where he does sound effects throughout the whole movie. Last I saw, he only does it for a segment or two.

When "Svengoolie" joined "The U" in 1995, I got a huge giggle out of "Svensurround", and all that dubbed in dialogue & sound effects. About 2 weeks ago, he aired the 1957 Universal monster movie "The Deadly Mantis" in that dubbed format. Want more? When "Svengoolie" aired the 1977 James Brolin movie "The Car", there was plenty of "Svensurround" added for "no extra charge". Appropriately, they added the "Knight Rider" theme from the '80s in the first 15 minutes of the movie. It's my understanding based on "Sven's" blog at WCIU.com, that "Svensurround" will soon make a comeback, depending on the movie featured.

In the flesh - I got a picture I'll try and post some time. He's puffy now (kinda like the King) so he must be eating his PB and banana sandwiches.

Isn't Koz actually the "Son of Svengoolie"? The original Svengoolie was Jerry G. Bishop.
I guess I'm showing my age.

He used to be Son of Svengoolie. He dropped the "son of" about a decade ago, if wikipedia is to be believed.

You are absolutely right, Don. Rich Koz, who has played "Svengoolie" for over 25 years on Chicago TV, actually received Jerry G.'s blessing to drop the "Son of" moniker when he joined WCIU in 1995. That's when Weigel Broadcasting turned Channel 26 into "The U". Don't feel bad. I'm old enough to remember when "Svengoolie" used to air on Saturday night on Channel 32. The films he aired back then were in black & white before WFLD became one of the FOX Television Stations in 1986.

The only movie I remember from the WFLD era was one with Killer Mushrooms. Does anyone know the name of that one?

from what I have read/heard bishop said he was old enough and doing the show so long that he can drop the whole son part

That and Bishop figured that the youngsters at that time wouldn't've known who he was anyways, and that the "Son of" part would have just confused them.

The original "Svengoolie", Jerry G. Bishop, is currently in a San Diego hospital trying to recover from a stroke, according to Sun-Times columnist Rob Feder. The current "Svengoolie", Rich Koz, will be featuring the 1961 sci-fi film "The Phantom Planet" on WCIU 26 "The U" Saturday at 9p & WWME 23 "Me TV" Sunday at 1a. According to my DIRECTV program guide, "Sven" pays a visit to the "TV Graveyard" next Saturday night at 9p. "Sven" & "The U" feature the first 2 episodes of "Lost in Space" from 1965. For those interested, the one at 9p next Saturday night is the RARELY seen pilot episode, in black & white, that does NOT feature Jonathan Harris as "Dr. Smith" & the Robot, voiced by Dick Tufeld. I kid you not!
