You should have asked him about the new job, and what was going to happen to his old job?

Long time Rahm guy as well (not as long as bigfan). I cannot believe he took the position. It seems like a step down to me, but I think he is a true believer. I expect him to be great at the new position, given the humbling experience of the first two years of the clinton administration...although he never seemed humble.

Remember bigfan, you will not get unless you ask, and the worst that can happen is you are told no.

I for one hope he isn't...Obama would be better served by a Chief of Staff who didn't kiss his ass, and more importantly, so would the country...

Post subject:  Re: RAHM

A true believer does not mean a yes man, at least in my mind. It is someone who believes in the vision and/or person.

Emmanuel would never be confused with a yes man. In many ways, before Tuesday, Rahm was a much more powerfull person than Obama.

Then why would he take the job. He is definitely not a money man (and he has already made himself a nice chunk anyway). He is all about power. Now chief of staff has power, but they come and go. He could have been congressman for life and a leader in congress to boot.

Who was FDR's chief of staff?

The president has a legacy. A congressman has a legacy. The chief of staff is a footnote, no matter how instrumental he is to success.

But I agree with your assessment, which goes along with my "true believer" theory.

How many chiefs of staff have become president? are there any?

good dolphin:
William Leahy. but that is debateable....many felt that Roosevelt didn't really have a true chief of staff.
btw: I actually knew this...8th grade president report. :)

Cheif of Staff is an extremely important and influencial position in the cabinent. Many guys who have held the position have been high rollers: Alexander Haig (Nixon), Donald Rumsfeld (Ford), Richard Cheney (Ford) and James Baker (Reagan & Bush I). None had become President, but Haig at onetime did try to take over the country as Secretary of State, so he was close (in his own mind).

 They probably talked him into pardoning Nixon. Hopefully, Rahm isn't a weasle like those two.

The other point to consider is that he is now an employee. He is reported to have a very abrasive style which got him demoted in his first go around as a senior white house staffer. Even if things go well, his managment style isn't the type that is able to stay in one position for a very long time.

C-SPAN had the 2005 C.U.R.E. roast of Rahm in HEAVY rotation this weekend.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) was honored in September of 2005 for his work with Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) and his commitment to finding a cure for epilepsy. Among the speakers at the event were Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), and Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT).

Held in DC, it is funny to see all the usual suspects from three years ago. Give it a spin.

Rahm, the Union Hypocrite
Former Clinton adviser Rahm Emanuel loves to accept money from organized labor, but years ago when he needed $70,000 worth of home remodeling, he gave the job to a non-union firm.
Union backers say they still support Emanuel, but called his decision to use a non-union firm at his Lake View home "disappointing.''
His Republican rival at the time called it hypocritical. And Emanuel himself described his failure to ask the west suburban contractor if he used union workers a "mistake."
"In hindsight, I should have asked," Emanuel said. "I didn't. So, it's a mistake."
The Chicago Sun-Times obtained a copy of an invoice from M.J.S. Construction, the St. Charles firm Emanuel hired in 2000. It describes the $70,000 project as a third-floor renovation.
Emanuel said he hired M.J.S. on a friend's recommendation when he and his wife, Amy Rule, needed more space for their new baby. He said he never thought to ask if the company used union workers.
"It's not like I have a philosophy against it," Emanuel said. "We had a new member of the family coming. . . . We needed to get something done and get it done quickly."
Emanuel, who touts the support of more than a dozen labor groups on his campaign Web site, said he would call labor officials to alert them about the non-union work.
"If they want an apology, I'm more than willing to apologize," he said.

I hate when this example of UNION is used to show whether a guy is backing the union or not.

$70,000 is not a huge amount of money for an extensive improvement to a house, thus most union shops want nothing to do with this kind of work.

Try and call a "Union Shop" and tell them you want to redo your master bathroom and wonder if they can send someone out for an estimate. 95% will never even call you back.

Union Shops exist to make sure large employers dont take advantage of the workers and the claim as well is that they teach their union members a "SKILLED" trade.

You need to find much much better for this angle. Plus, what if the guy doesn't give a crap about the unions? and I don't think he does.

But Big, a $5000 bathroom is not a $70,000 renovation. While most union guys will say no to $5,000, I don't know any who'd turn down $70,000. (unless they were busy working for Frank Thomas - oh wait, my bad!)

A $70,000 renovation is not that big a job and is nothing for a Union shop. Maybe there is a $10,000 profit in that job.

I know many people that used much bigger union shops that are used to doing bigger jobs to redo their homes. 7 months later than are in a panic and I get a call.

$70,000 for a 2,000 SF office space is $35 a foot. Thats a normal office buildout in downtown. Many "UNION" shops are inthe commercials arena for the bigger jobs. I have done both, commercial office buildings and houses. I would never consider a union guy for a house, the costs would be incredible. At the same time I would never use a non union guy in an office building , where they would not be familar with water systems, HVAC, etc in larger buildings.

Jordans house. A good friend of mine built it and he was not union. Many of the subs they used were, and that was because so much of the house was commercial grade material (Roof, Steel, etc) but they didnt pay $48 an hour for a guy to roll paint on a wall, or hang drywall because he was "Union"

So when I hear shit like "he didnt use a union guy" it's just someone on a witch hunt.

Do you call a big game hunter when you have a rat? You could and it would be done right, but I am guessing your bill would be 10 times more and the damage when he was done might be some additional funds.

Beyond well said.

Well he always publicly said he was interested in being Mayor, plus I kinda asked him in 2007 or so, I estimate in 2008 he would have only been about a 6-1 wager.
