Heard Mac mention these two the other day and it reminded me of my run in with them many years ago. About as random as it comes. During the Bulls dynasty I lived on Diversey a block east of Sheffield. After each clincher me and my friends would go down to the corner of Diversey and Sheffield and start our rioting with a few minutes of drinking and screaming on the corner before heading down into the heart of the city. We would always have a few posters to get the crowd going and the cars honkig their horns. The posters always were the same....I had a Perkins, Blow me poster the first year and every year it would be replaced by a differnent opposing player. My brother had a Detroit Sucks poster which eventually became Detroit Still Sucks. And on the back of that, my brother had a Fuck Bob Costas which we managed to get shown on ABC's news coverage so many times that the next day several radio shows including North were ripping on ABC for continuing to show us on tv. Anyway, after the Bulls beat the Sonics, we went down to the corner with our signs and some beer, champagne and a couple joints. Five mintues later a limo pulls up at the White Hen. Out of the limo steps John Popper and Bobby Shehan. He starts walking across the street towards us. Me and my brother turn to each other at the same time and say is this really happening? So Popper and Shehan come up to us and say they need to use the pay phone cause they are trying to find out where Dennis Rodman's after party is. After making their call we offer them a beer and ask if they want to smoke a joint with us. They both accept the beer, but Popper says he doesn't smoke but he is more than happy to pass the joint along to Shehan who was more than happy to join us in doing some drugs. They stayed for about 15 minutes and got a kick out of me and my friends running into the street to celebrate with random people and cars at the intersection. Then they took off for the party and we took off on our yearly rioting route towards Division. And a few years later Shehan died of a drug overdose. I threw it away eventually, but for awhile I had a poster board that said Payton Blow Me autographed by John Popper and Bobby Shehan. |
