I was fortunate enough to meet five world class drummers at a five day drum seminar at Vic's drum shop here in Chicago. They were all super cool and they jammed every night along with the students accompanied by an amazing house band. The instructors were Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Benny Greb, Jojo Mayer and Mike Mangini.

Incredible...

Any local person on this board that plays drums needs to check out Vic's shop. It's amazing.

You did the camp? Super jealous - those are some serious heavyweights in the drumming world. I intended to make one of the Martyr's shows, but interacting with someone like Smith or Greb would be insane.

It was life changing. I had a six hour class with Jojo, Steve Smith, Benny and Mike Mangini. Just insane. They were all open with advice and told TONS of hilarious and crazy stories.

Jojo had to create an entire new genre of music in NY just so he could have his musical voice heard. Incredibly inspirational story.

I have so much information. Now, it's up to me to bust my ass and apply this shit to my playing...

A couple of my drummer buddies and I saw Smith at a clinic many years ago. Hes great. We also saw Simon Phillips. Holy shit was he great. Saw Buddy Rich at Triton College.
Back in my drumming days I would go to Franks Drum Shop on Wabash in the city. Franks was THE drum shop BITD and all the greats shopped and played there. I miss playing.

He was really cool. A lot of shit he talked about could be applied in other facets of life. Looking at the big picture, making smart decisions, playing from within yourself... for yourself, building chemistry with bandmates, etc.

His demonstrations of technique were INSANE!!!!

Are you familiar with the work of Todd Sucherman as a drummer? What is your opinion of him?

Thanks!

First of all that's a great list of instructors. Some of my drumline peers saw a Dave Weckyl clinic back in the 80's and thought it was great.

Todd Sucherman plays for Styx, correct? He's pretty damn awesome from what i know.

Is Steve Smith the same as Steve "machine gun" Smith that played with Journey back in the 80's?

Yes. He left Journey and played in progressive jazz fusion bands.

He's a few years older than me, but I knew him growing up. He was a prodigy and his immense talent was obvious from a very young age. Music seemed to flow out of him at all times, and it was almost as if he inhabited a different world than everyone else.
