I will give a warning "on your left" as I approach someone. It's more so the runner/walker/cyclist doesn't veer into my path. Nor do I mind when someone says this to me when I'm running. I usually will raise up my left hand to acknowledge I hear them. I get into the left lane when passing someone on the path, but that doesn't mean idiots, who aren't paying attention, won't wander into your path.

I understand why it's done. I just don't like it when I'm running and a guy does it to me and I never do it when I'm on my bike. You yell, "ON YOUR LEFT!!!!" and I hear "STAY OUT OF MY WAY, MOTHERFUCKER!!!" It's sort of like when someone uses the phrase "excuse me" to do whatever he wants like shove you out of the way and barge in front of you. I figure if I'm coming up from behind someone it's my responsibility to be able stop my bike or avoid hitting a guy who veers. It's not a superhighway.

Eh, I don't hear it that way. I also don't shout it at the other person. Even if it's a Lance wannabe, or Grandma Betty on her banana seat creeping along, I think it's good to give a heads up. You never know if the idiot walker is going to see some flower on the left side of the path and dart over to take a picture. I've had those moments where I get so involved in my Nickelback or Bieber where I lose track of where I'm running within my lane. Luckily a cyclist is usually there to bring me back to life and out from How You Remind Me-ville.

I'm with Greg on this one. And I don't yell it either.

But you do listen to Nickelback and Bieber?

I don't think ONE of those jagoffs ever said it early enough for me to 1)hear 2)comprehend 3)take appropriate action before he was long past me.

Whenever I see motor or pedal bikes anywhere near a heavily populated area, it brings a warm feeling knowing that this biker-person will someday contribute to the continued life and happiness of the person and family of an individual in need of a donor organ.

Encourage your friends and family to ride pedal bikes and motorcycles, it's the best source of donor organs we have.

The only point in the guy's favor is that he was wearing regular clothes and not a little Lance Armstrong outfit. The other guy at Golf and Meacham was. This can also be a douchebag sub-nomination for guys who treat a forest preserve as a competitive track. People are casually running, walking, riding a bike, rollerblading, whatever, and here come one or more of these turd jugglers who think they're in the Tour De France.

Yes, absolutely. I'll be casually riding my bike on the forest preserve path when all of a sudden here come these jackasses in their little costumes simulating the Tour De France. One time my bike was slightly over the middle line when this guy came in speeding behind me and then subsequently cursed me out.

I'm not in this kind of shape right now, but there have been times when one of those jerk-offs comes up all quick behind me like a douchebag and so I let him pass and ride his ass as long as he wants to go. It's satisfying when he gets all twitchy and starts shoulder checking me every ten seconds. Ride on, motherfucker! That's not easy work though since I've got a basic Trek with big knobby tires and most of the guys that ride like that are on road bikes.

 No doubt. Just last week I kicked a car that nearly made a right turn right over me on the North Shore Trail at Main Street. I'm not an aggressive bike asshole. Just don't threaten me with your vehicle.

Yeah, I understand. The worst is when those guys swerve right back in front of you as if you're an orange cone on a fucking closed course. Or the guys who chase you to get in front, only to slow the pace once they actually pass you.

I do enjoy seeing a well-placed car kick. Nothing says city life like seeing someone do it and then go about doing their business again.

my biggest problem with them is that they want it both ways. like they want special treatment because they're on a mobile polygon with a water bottle attached to it. they want to be treated like pedestrians when they come to intersections, but also try to share the road.

path bicyclists are pretty insufferable. speeding by you on their decked out uniform while shouting "on your left!" really makes me wish a deer would jump out of nowhere and send them into the trees.

but city bicyclists could be the most criminal of garbages.

That sums it up well.

I would have never pictured JORR as a bicycle guy

Oak Park man, 91, dies in bike accident

A 91-year-old Oak Park man died in a cycling accident while crossing Madison Street in the near west suburban village, police said Friday.

Suleyman Cetin, of the 500 block of Madison Street, was traveling north on Scoville Avenue about 8 p.m. Thursday when a 46-year-old Bellwood man driving a sedan struck and killed him as the cyclist attempted to cross Madison Street, according to a Village of Oak Park news release.

The driver, Ivory Roland, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, the release states.

The victim's family bears the driver no ill will, said Sabri Cetinkunt, Cetin's 51-year-old son.

"It seems like it was just an unfortunate accident and we wish for all the best," Cetinkunt said.

The son reflected on his father's life Friday, nothing that he worked his usual day shift at a car wash just last week.

"He did believe in always working," Cetinkunt said.

Dressed in his usual attire of a yellow shirt, jeans and a baseball cap, the 91-year-old was working at Valero Gas Station, on the corner of East Avenue and Madison, last Friday, said 23-year-old Valero employee Jay Samad.

Cetin's job was to wipe the cars dry after they were washed, Samad said.

"He was a strong man," Samad said. "A very nice guy, too. He was just so nice to everyone."

A Turkish-born man who retired from a shipyard laborer job in Germany and emigrated to the United States about 30 years ago, Cetin worked odd jobs at car washes and fast-food restaurants for the last 25 years in Oak Park, the son said. He said his father changed his last name when he immigrated.

Too bad about the old timer. I got into it with the Oak Park traffic engineer one time about pedestrian safety. Claimed nobody ever dies in Oak Park. Asshole. Police chief was an asshat too. Lot of traffic going between between Austin and Maywood/Bellwood.

When did people start thinking it was OK to do this? It's almost as if he's daring someone to hit him.

I used to do that, but only if I were making my way to a left turning lane. Even then, I'd be doing hand signals, not trying to piss people off.

What i don't like are people who won't stop at stop lights/signs. I'm sorry, it's your fault you're on a pedal-powered vehicle -- that's no excuse not the obey the rules of the road. (For those who whine, "oh, it's too haaaaard to get back up to speed from a stop." Shaddup, man up, suck it up, etc...)
