The co-pilot of the Germanwings plane that flew into the Alps...
This from the Tribune...

Quote:
The co-pilot of the Germanwings jet barricaded himself in the cockpit and intentionally rammed the plane full speed into the French Alps, ignoring the captain's frantic pounding on the door and the screams of terror from passengers, a prosecutor said Thursday.

In a split second, all 150 people aboard the plane were dead.

Andreas Lubitz's "intention (was) to destroy this plane," Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said, laying out the horrifying conclusions French investigators reached after listening to the last minutes of Tuesday's Flight 9525 from the plane's black box voice data recorder.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the conclusions brought the tragedy to a "new, simply incomprehensible dimension."

They're not saying it's suicide, terrorism, or politically motivated (read: terrorism) but they're saying it was completely intentional, and the copilot was breathing normally (not panting or panicked) as he flew straight into the ground, with the locked out pilot pounding on the door.

This story is crazy and so sad on many levels. They also said they could hear the people screaming right before it hit the mountain.

I didn't mean it that way, just talking about how awful that must have been for the investigators to have to hear that, not to mention the poor souls on the plane.

Totally. I meant it more towards the news reports, like what the hell did they expect. Only quoted you for context of where I saw. No offense meant.

dude, if i was on that plane i would have blurted something out like TIME TO FIND OUT IF I'M GOD!!!!! and attempted to go super saiyan right there on the spot. and i like to think that the whole impending death thing would have brought out the best in me, and that got me to thinking, man, at 6'4"/275 what if i got going at full speed and jumped into the door a few times, did they try that? ....hrmmm.

here's a primer on going super saiyan btw. remember that kakarot = goku's saiyan name = literally tossing a carrot to the peasants. vegeta is based off of vegetable and he gives you nourishment. important allegorical lessons here.

Ironic that the post-9/11 measures taken to protect the cockpit ended up backfiring.

How horrible it must have been for the passengers to watch the pilot pounding on the door trying to get back in. Why European airlines don't have the same policy as the US of having a flight attendant go into the cockpit when one of the pilots needs to take a leak is beyond me.

Either way, there's nothing to say the pilot or the stewardess wouldn't have been able to overpower/stop the co-pilot. Possibly, the same result...

There's some interesting stuff out there you can read about pilot override codes to get back in the cockpit and such. It seems though that if someone has taken control, they can pretty much keep control of the cockpit as long as they are conscious. I agree that they will probably look into a policy change perhaps? The current rules state that you need to stay in the cockpit unless a "physiological reason" requires you to leave. However, there's no rule about leaving the cockpit in the control of one person.

btw guys, i checked in with the lunatic fringe today and they're talking about redacted details about a fighter jet escort and claiming that airbus 320s still have anti-hijacking-measures in them where they can be taken over remotely if they detect some shit is going down, not to mention another claim about how after 5 minutes the pilot shoulda still been able to get in.

they claim that they wouldnt be surprised if there's eventually an islamic link to all of this unearthed to ramp up excuses for yemen.

also, they do ask the question that i havent really seen covered in my sporadic glimpses of the MSM today: who was on the plane? you'll just hear something like "16 german schoolchildren" and go "ohhh that's terrible" and move on like you're supposed to. but what if there was some sort of business exec or something on there? you know there were a bunch of higher ups at some semiconducter on malaysia 370 or something.

Had passed all certs and what not. Who knows what they dig up about him.
The 5 min thing the co pilot could override in cockpit manually even if pilot outside door knew code to open door.

 I think the original story was that it happened so suddenly and unexpectedly that none of the passengers knew what happened.

I don't think a passenger was a target because there was no guarantee the captain would need a bathroom break on a two-hour flight.

When you drink 6 beers in the lounge before takeoff, sometimes you just have to tinkle.

This isn't a James Bond movie. If they wanted someone dead, it seems the easier route would be to just shoot the guy.

Or, you could infiltrate a pilot training class and secretly identify the student to turn, then wait for him to get his certification. You probably have some influence so that you could arrange that student to get a job with the German airline that the target is known to frequent. Then, it's patience....eventually you're able to maneuver your pilot onto the target's plane for a flight that's long enough to get isolation in the cockpit. This could have been a trial run but fortune shined on the assassin when the pilot inexplicably had to use the restroom an hour into the flight. Now, he only needs to override the keypad access and steer the plane directly into the Alps, precisely as planned.

We've had enough incidents in recent memory to justify the creation of a remote-control operation. From Payne Stewart's plane, the Helios depressurization, the Northwest pilots overshooting Minneapolis for an hour, the four planes on 9/11, Malaysia 370, and now this - we know they can do it, but are they willing to invest the
money?

This is all an overreaction just like that happens after any kind of tragedy. Some common sense solutions are all that is needed. The first being that their should be two people in the cockpit at all times. That seems like a no-brainer, and I no it is common here.

Secondly, this guy should have never been allowed to fly a plane. He had a history of depression, and that should be a major red flag in that industry. I would have thought pilots have to take some sort of psychological evaluation in order to fly commercial airliners. It's surprising that doesn't seem to be the case.

This is rule on US Carriers. Not sure why this is not the case in the rest of the world. If there are only two pilots, then a flight attendant goes into the cockpit while a pilot hits the head.

"recent" is 12, 15 years?

Two people in the cockpit did what in the Payne Stewart and Helios depressurizations, the Northwest overshoot and MH370?

Remote control of commercial aircraft could lead to far worse scenarios.
