From an ABC article:

"A comment in the Official Baseball Rules to Rule 5.09 (a) (13) says umpires could have called an inning-ending double play if they decided Utley had gone outside the baseline and interfered with Tejada fielding the throw.

"The objective of this rule is to penalize the offensive team for deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base," the comment says. "Obviously this is an umpire's judgment play."

But you've never, ever seen that called, have you?

There are many instances where the actual game of baseball isn't played or called in accordance with the written rules. We can start with the strikezone.

It seems like some guys in this thread are talking about the way things should be rather than they way they have always been. And there's no problem with that. spanky's point about replay's effect on the neighborhood play is well taken. If a runner isn't allowed to crush an infielder the neighborhood play is unnecessary.

My issue is the sudden and arbitrary enforcement in a crucial situation. It's reminiscent of Merkle's "boner".

No, but it should be. You could then eliminate the neighborhood rule and stop having people break their fucking legs unnecessarily. I've never been a fan of trying to kill the shortstop on double plays. If you can't drill catchers, you shouldn't drill a guy with no gear who is trying to make an athletic play.

I probably agree with your argument, but there's that should. I don't think a player and his team should be punished for doing something that has been done since the inception of the game. If you want to change the rules, change them. But not arbitrarily in the middle of a playoff series.

@JORR... No, I completely agree with that. That's why the discussion should not be around whether the play was dirty (which is 100% subjective) but whether the play was legal.

Yeah, but even the legality of it shouldn't be examined right here right now. It may well have been illegal based on the written rule, but it's been accepted practice. To suddenly enforce it is bullshit. It's very similar to Merkle's "boner", where a rookie simply exercised the standard practice of the time and a goofy umpire allowed veteran Johnny Evers to make the force play contrary to custom instead of looking at Evers and saying, "Are you out of your fucking mind?"

i think the umpires themselves are the ones that need to be suspended.
They absolutely made a clusterfuck out of the whole play. Even with replay they missed the fact that it was interference.

The slide was dirty. It's common. I do think it should be enforced, but you don't suddenly start enforcing in the playoffs.
