It’s called vomit fraud. And it could make your Uber trip really expensive

Quote:
The next time you use Uber, check your bill. The trip could turn out to be expensive — not just for the distance but for a type of fraud that is on the rise.

It’s called “vomit fraud,” a scam repeatedly denounced in social networks yet still taking place around the world.

And Miami, of course, is a common spot.

What is it? Passengers request Uber cars, which deliver them to their destination. So far so good.

But soon the passenger receives a note from Uber reporting an “adjustment” in the bill and an extra charge that can range from $80 to $150, depending on the driver’s degree of crookedness.

If you think that’s frustrating, you’re right. But the worst is still to come.

it really is best to just call your local taxi company and schedule a pickup.

uber/lyft is great in a pinch, but you cant expect there to be no risk. its literally an unsolicited stranger giving you a hitchhike.

Not sure if it was fraud or someone else in the car, but this absolutely happened to me. The email "process" is a fucking joke with Uber.

I always tipped Uber drivers $5 and i'd always get a 4.5+ star driver scooping me up in like 2-3 minutes. I eventually found out they have a profile/rating for riders too. Even tho it might seem antithetical to spend $5 extra when you took Uber to save $5-15 on a cab when you're going from city >> suburbs and cabbies give you some bullshit excuse to cover their deadheading costs it tends to balance out.

That said, even tho this kind of shit happens I still think drivers are taking the bigger risk by inviting the general public into their back seat. I think you've gotta have some kind of a chauffeur license to legally Uber/lyft someone in the city whereas any schmuck with a debit card can get a ride.

Doubtful I actually will but reading this stuff makes me wonder if I should make it a practice of taking a picture or two of the car interior and driver upon exiting the vehicle.

Although we were in Miami in January and took MANY Ubers and Lyfts and never had a problem. But we do always tip (fairly generously) and give 5-star ratings to all but the most terrible drivers so I wonder if there is some correlation?
