The Big Ten didn't even have hockey until 2014 though some schools had teams but most of them were in states that bordered Canada.
I didn't even know the Big Ten had hockey. I thought Minnesota, Michigan State, and Wisconsin played in that league with UIC and Michigan Tech and some others.
They do. They want at least one of the Indiana/Illinois schools to do it but no one can come up with the $50 million from a rich donor to get it done.
Notre Dame is also a Big Ten hockey member.
Yeah every few years you see an article about it.. got a bit of a push after penn state built an arena for it a few years back. I remember buying a t shirt from the club team years ago when I was a freshman..
Yeah, hockey is a completely different animal.
My son played went to Mankato (Minnesota State) for a year, but did not play. They have a practice team and even that is really tough to make. These D1 Hockey schools are big time programs, but for many of them that's their only big time program.
Already said....D1 in the area is limited (Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State). The other D1 teams are the Mankato and Duluth's of the world. UIC, ISU, Northern.....they're either D3 or club. It's entirely different hierarchy than football and basketball.
D1 Hockey is pretty fucking awesome, though.
