You read him when you're 21-22 and outgrow him soon after.

I actually spent an evening betting horses with him at Los Alamitos in the late 80s or early 90s.

He was able to capture life among a certain social strata in post-war Los Angeles. His work is pretty L.A.-centric. It's informed by the Los Angeles of a particular time the same way Algren's writing is by Chicago, particularly 40s/50s Chicago. He's certainly not my favorite writer but Factotum is a masterpiece.

Hazardous Youth is playing an upcoming show with a band called Henry Chinaski.

I'm reading Post Office right now. I haven't outgrown a lot of things from my youth.

I think he's a fun read and I don't even like wine.

I wouldn't put him anywhere near the top of the list of annoying hipster stuff.

for me that would be denis johnson.

there's only one denis who should spell his name with one "n".

Post Office was the first and only book I’ve read and couldn’t get through it. He’s an alcoholic and likes to swear. Real cool bro. Maybe I’ll give Factotum a try sometime.

True, and it’s Savard. My name has two “n’s” as my CFMB handle is not denis dman but rather den (dennis) is dman. Plus my real name spell backwards only works with two n’s.

I'm sure Oprah's book club would have some inoffensive suggestions for you.

at the ceremony
held for him
at the track tonight
(Los Alamitos 10-1-84)
as the drivers gathered in a
circle
in their silks
at the finish line
I had to turn my back
to the crowd
and climb the upper grandstand
steps
to the wall
so the people wouldn’t
see me
cry.

Factotum is one of those books you sound smart for simply saying the name of.

Incidentally, Dos Factotum is a good song by 2000s indie rapper du jour louis logic. After a show of his @ DePaul circa 01-02 we hung out at Quenchers drinking El Fin Du Monde and literally talking about the End of the World.

Of course, we knew fuckall about Delta Variants and Carbon Taxes back then.
