Maybe another way to look at it... if the LIV golfing officials said, "Hey Beardown, we want you to hit the ceremonial first drive to open our event and then we'll wine and dine you the rest of the day." You say, that sounds cool, I am going to get to meet some famous golfers and hang and stuff. Do you show up to the event without ever going to a driving range to practice? At that point, isn't it worth investing $50 or whatever to have to some semblance of knowledge of what you are doing? Nobody is going to expect you to tee it up like McIlroy or Bubba Watson or anything, just make reasonable contact and put it reasonably forward.
In this instance, it costs you $5 for a baseball (I just realized that I don't really know what it costs for a baseball -- I feel like you could get one for $5ish from Walmart?) But you take that and then you practice throwing. If you don't know how to throw, you watch a Youtube video that shows you how. Then you get a little better. You still can't do it? You call a friend or ask an acquaintenance for a favor to show you how to do it. Spend a few hours learning how to do it. It seems like the least you could do to show respect to the people who asked you if you would like to do it.
