Yeah it's a weird phenomenon that I first noticed in gaming culture a few years ago. I can't put a date to it but it was around the peak of the Fortnite craze when streamers were the biggest names in gaming media. Don't know whether it flowed from there or they were just downstream of something else, but you're definitely right that it has permeated sports fandom culture.

I blame the wife of the guy who died on the 9/11 flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. She tried to make "Let's Roll" a thing and trademarked it, totally not cashing in on it. Creative people had to make a similar phrase to avoid conflict.
