Quote:
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones will not report to camp Thursday because he wants his contract reworked, league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The Falcons are aware of Jones' plans and hope he changes his mind, per sources.

Jones could be fined up to $40,000 for each day he misses. The Falcons' first practice is Friday.

The team has previously said that it will not rework his deal.

Jones signed a five-year, $71 million contract in 2015 that included a $12 million signing bonus and $47 million guaranteed. His base salary this season is $10.5 million.
I can think of nothing more appropriate for this than

....more out of season NFL news!

I usually do not care about guys trying to get paid. Example this year is Leveon Bell. But you sign the damn contract for the guarantee stick to it. Friggin Scottie Pippen in here.

ive done a complete 180 on player holdouts over the last 10 years.... fuck the owners, if no guarenteed contracts and their careers can be over on any given play... they can hold out as needed to get their point across.

I am with you unless they have a current deal. Renegotiate sure but no hold out.

and do you feel the same way when the owners cut a player and essentially don't hold their end of a contract up

NFL contracts are all one year deals. It goes both ways...like Caller Bob.

I do feel bad at times but the other side of the coin is the sports where that kills teams.

not reporting is the only leverage players have.... the NFL stomped the players association on the last CBA. they let the commish be the arbiter of all player discipline

He was all aboard with the extension he signed in 2015 and stated he was glad to be a Falcon for life. I would feel more sympathy for him and understand the "NFL is a tough business, get it while you can" argument more if he was on a terrible rookie contract and hadn't yet been paid, but he got a big contract and even if he suffered a career-ending injury (which i hope he does not) he already has generational wealth.

If i signed my name to a contract at my job agreeing to terms for the next 5 years of my employment, that might be an appropriate comparison. I dont personally have a problem with him wishing he made more money, the problem is deciding just to not go to work until you get what you want. Is it his right to do? Sure. It is also a douchebag move.

I'm not rooting for the owners. I'm saying Jones is a Dbag for being in the middle of a $70million deal and crying foul.

And while most owners are complete shitheads, Arthur Blank has fairly reasonable ticket prices and dirt cheap concession prices compared to the rest of the league which at least shows he can relate just a tiny bit to the real fans.

Any player at the skill level of Julio Jones should be lauded for doing everything he can to miss as much of training camp as possible. Why risk it? Matty Ice will know where to find him.

I'm not hating on him at all, and certainly not for wanting to be paid what he is worth, but don't sign your name on a 5-year deal if you know in 2 or 3 years you will be unhappy with it. Go with a shorter term deal so that you can renegotiate every couple years and always feel like you are being paid appropriately.

the length of contract means nothing.... its all about guaranteed money...come on now.

Of course the length means something, as he is finding out as the value of others contracts fly by his while he still has a couple years to go prompting him to hold out. His last contract had 48 million guaranteed. He was very pleased with that at the time. Listen I'm not hating on Julio Jones or saying he doesn't deserve more or less than what he got, but he wanted a long term extension near the top of the league a couple years ago and got it, now someone else has something better and he has remorse and wants a re-do. Whether he gets one or not is immaterial, it is still a douchebag move.

That's not a realistic expectation with how NFL contracts work.

If you hired a contractor to paint your entire house under a contract, and then he asked for more money after finishing 4/5 of the house, you would be pissed. But that is not the exact situation in the NFL. Under their rules, you as the homeowner could fire the guy and not pay the rest of his contract. So it's a warped world.

Both sides agreed to this deal under collective bargaining. Both sides seem to hate certain aspects of it, which probably means it is a pretty fair labor agreement. And everyone is making a lot of money.

Kinda weird that one side is expected to live up to the contract and the other side can back out anytime they want.

Even weirder how people seem to side with management more than ever in this day and age.

He did. And in the NFL, teams can void deals pretty much whenever they want, so players holding out is part of the negotiations.

Elmhurst Steve only paints 3/5 of the house and then asks for more money.
