Sorry, I'm an introvert in an office full of very, very sociable extroverts. They are incapable of getting the hint that their never-ending regaling of every little idea that pops into their head isn't critical to my work day.

I'm sure I'm not the only person that has experienced this.

Introverts are too polite to do that. I usually do the Jay Cutler jerk-face eye roll, or turn my back and just start typing on the keyboard. But they just keep going and going and going.

I'd start asking which episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is their favorite. Your issue will be solved.

Extroverts are not so easily thwarted. The response to such a query would be "oh, I don't watch that show. But I do watch the Bachelor. It was so great last night. If you don't watch it, here's how it works...."

You could just... not acknowledge them at all. Do whatever you are doing as if they don't exist or are saying anything. That drives extroverts crazy and they will move quickly along to another easier target for their drivel.

Actually I'm not sure about that. From most of what I've read (yes I have actually researched this), extroverts want a sounding board, not someone that will talk back at them. So, ignoring them actually invites them to continue their downloading process. I've read that actually interrupting them and talking back at them is a more effective approach. I've tried that, but it's hard. Being obtrusive and chatty just does not come naturally to me (except when I'm on the CSFMB apparently).

I always knew there was something I didn't like about you.

I'm an introvert too, but is there that much wrong with someone making friendly conversation for a moment? It happens to me at work sometimes. All I do is pretend to care for a few moments and then it's over. No big deal.

my chums at work are all extroverts. they're fine if you're one on one with them, but get them all together at the same table and it's really unnerving. it's "fight for the mic" all the time. everyone trying to get in a quip. it's kind of like a CSI episode.

+1 I have been working in the same row of cubes for about 4 years now with all women. I don't want to hear
every mundane aspect of their lives from 2 or 3 cubes away. Headphones have saved my sanity. I am the last
one to hear any gossip but I really don't care. This bodes well with my strict policy of not hanging out with people
from work or attending work events like picnics and X-mas parties. 45 hours a week is plenty to spend with you.
