Since SS didn't like my lottery example because of a technicality on the amount of time normally required to turn it in, how about this?

I become the world's most famous painter. I go to my basement and paint 10 paintings that are the same. I sell painting 1 for $10 million to JORR and pay tax on that. For the other 9 paintings, I just keep them stored in my basement. My net worth is now $100 million based on those paintings. When should I be taxed on the value of the other 9 paintings? What if I keep them for 20 years in my basement because I am fine living off the money I already made and don't need or want more?

Perhaps the better question is whether or not it is ethical for people to amass billions and billions of dollars and then work backwards from there.

No need to point out that my view of whether or not having billions of dollars is ethical is entirely dependent on my not having billions of dollars.

It's still the same question. They don't have billions of dollars. That's easy. They pay taxes on the billions of dollars they have pulled out of the thing that made them a billionaire. It's about something they own that had it's value increase so much that they now have something that could be sold for billions of dollars if they wanted to.

Even better: If you die your paintings will immediately be worth far more and then JORR would have to worry about capital gains.

I am guessing these paintings would be like the portrait of Dorian Gray.

I think the billionaires club gets together and decides on a one billionaire that take all the heat for all the other billionaires (or multi-millionaires because billionaires don't actually exist). Meanwhile they continue their shady shit while the Bezos' and Gates' of the world run cover.

When is the last time the Sackler family was in the news?

How could these ingrates do this to our lovely and noble friend Jeff Bezos? Don't they understand that he doesn't have any liquid cash right now?

There are a lot of things not to like about Amazon. Sadly, a lot of it is consumer driven. Just look at how insane some people get when gas prices go up 30 cents. They want their cheap stuff and don't really care about anything else. Even now, it's "Arby's can't hire anyone with their offer of $11/hr! Curly fries are going to have to raise in price!".

Our desire to consume all things at all times is what ensures no change will ever occur. Who gives a flying fuck about some HS drop-out or retiree pissing into a bottle in an Amazon fulfilment center, the newest season of Jack Ryan was just released!

Pretty much. Though the government should step in and do something but even that won't be popular with voters.

its not just billionaires. many business owners who are successful have a deep rooted disdain for their employees. they believe no one has worked as hard as they have to build what they've built. Not all of them certainly but its a lot of them.

Agreed, but let’s stay focused on the major issue here.

Billionaires are bad for society.

But are they? They give us the jobs we need to buy stuff to fill the void inside ourselves.

The sooner we abandon consumerism, the sooner we can fill the void with resentment. Many recruiters on standby.

But would you have to pay tax on all of the free beers you receive at local watering holes, Elmhurst Rick?

Apparently the plan to hire "wicked smart" managers right out of college isn't working out that well. A good friend of mine was an executive his entire career. He had a few good jobs, but the last company he was working for shut down a couple years before he hit retirement age. He went to work at Amazon just to keep him in health insurance and for a little walking around money. He's the smartest guy in the place by far. Managers come and ask him advice. The other employees prefer to ask him questions rather than going to the managers who are fucking shit up. But he's just another guy packing boxes. He can see ways to improve stuff and sometimes he mentions it, sometimes he doesn't. Once in awhile a manager will take his advice and then take credit for it. My guy doesn't care. They approached him about a management position. NOT INTERESTED. But guaranteed he could run the place a lot better than the "wicked smart" people he reports to.

One of my best friends is a high level recruiter for Amazon’s tech stuff. They treat everyone but the hourly folks like royalty apparently.

Maybe that's the skilled employees. My guy says that the people managing the shipping aren't really treated that well. Better than the hourly drones, but not great.
