There's not much left to loot on the south and west sides, and downtown is closed off.

The cop neighborhoods are what is mostly left in the city. Other than that you move to the suburbs.

Little Village Neighbors Stand Guard At Street Corners: ‘They Don’t Want Anyone Looting Or Tearing Their Community Apart’
Mauricio Peña @MauricioPena

LITTLE VILLAGE — As word spread Sunday that two businesses were looted in the historic 26th Street corridor, Little Village residents chased out people damaging property and stood guard at street corners for hours to protect the business district.

Just after noon Sunday, at least two stores were targeted by people who pulled up, smashed windows, and made out with several shoes, said Pastor Matt DeMateo, executive director of New Life Centers, citing social media videos.

In the aftermath, DeMateo said neighbors, young adults, business owners and some gang-involved individuals united with police to “hold peace in the neighborhood.” More than 400 people kept watch over businesses along 26th Street, from Kedzie to Koster avenues, DeMateo said.

“Guys in the neighborhood are out here protecting their own neighborhood saying ‘they don’t want anyone looting or tearing their community apart,’’’ DeMateo said. They are “making sure that if there is anyone coming through that thinks they are going to destroy any of the businesses they are not going to allow it.”

After a Saturday night that saw widespread damage to the Loop and River North, destruction and thefts from stores spread to Chicago neighborhoods Sunday.

But Mayor Lori Lightfoot and other city leaders were clear that those causing damage were not the same people who peacefully protested the killings of George Floyd and other Black people at the hands of police.

Ald. Michael Rodriguez (22nd) walked the 26th Street corridor for hours Sunday speaking with business owners, residents and community organizers. The looting occurred just outside his ward in the 12th Ward, he said.

“There are a ton of community residents that were out there in a sign of unity to support our businesses that are so important to our residents,” Rodriguez said. “I was so inspired today to see young people, and older people out there supporting our business district,” he said.

By Sunday evening, police had closed off 26th Street, he said.

“It’s been incredibly stressful,” Rodriguez said. “We are lucky to have a committed group of community-based organizations in the neighborhood…some of which have good working relationships with the police and that’s [playing] out today.”

Ald. George Cardenas (12th) could not be reached for comment Sunday night.

In a video posted on social media, a person is seen telling looters targeting a Game Stop to get out of the neighborhood. Another video shows police leading away a man in handcuffs by police as people can be heard saying: “We got this.”

DeMateo noted the property destruction and unrest comes as the community still is struggling through the coronavirus pandemic. The 60623 ZIP code, which includes Little Village, has recorded the highest number of positive cases in the entire state, with more than 3,000 cases, according to Illinois Department of Public Health statistics.

“COVID has really rocked our community, any more damage to our community is the last thing we want now,” DeMateo said.

In the economic downturn from COVID, DeMateo said his group has been working to feed 6,000 families weekly.

“We are not going to let another wave of looting and rioting come in and impact our community as well… The community is coming together… we are stronger together,” he said.

The Latin King's shut the looting down.

suburbs are still ripe for the pickin

I walked past one of the building that was attempted to be looted in Oak Lawn this morning. The front window was smashed out. They did not get much as cops showed up and chased them through the neighborhood. But that was like 3 people. What would happen if 30 or 40 looters walked up on places here?

From the looks of it the white bougie parts of the city, home to the liberal transplant population of Big 10 grads, has been left relatively untouched. That's a pretty big swath of area that can put be put into the furnace to buy time for the middle class strongholds to fortify and prepare.

C’mon Nas he has a point . Why aren’t these “ white agitators “ being beat the fuck down if and when they start this shit ? Whomever the community leaders are should be encouraging outing them if they truly are to blame .

I think we've seen that some of them are. But you know, in the middle of chaos like this there are a lot of different impulses and emotions. Not everyone is thinking clearly. There's a reason it's called a riot.

I would say that every individual out there is only responsible for his or herself and each person has their own intentions and reasons for their actions. But that's the problem with trying to group people collectively by attributes like skin color. If you do that for political gain, the other side of that is people outside your group are probably going to judge you collectively too.

I am very sorry he died, but the killing of one black man should not be an excuse for mayhem and lawlessness.

Black people are not helping their cause right now. They should be looking to MLK's example.

Yeah that's just how the military talks, bro. There was this Lt. Colonel I worked with who used this exact type of language to describe the most benign things. I'm pretty sure domination is part of some unofficial doctrine. Its word you'll hear officers, particularly USAF officers, say a lot.

Quote:
An autopsy commissioned for George Floyd’s family found that he died of asphyxiation due to neck and back compression when a Minneapolis police officer held his knee on Floyd's neck for several minutes and ignored his cries of distress, the family’s attorneys said Monday.

The autopsy by a doctor who also examined Eric Garner’s body found the compression cut off blood to Floyd’s brain, and weight on his back made it hard to breathe, attorney Ben Crump said at a news conference.

Chauvin obviously has his own issues (his actions, especially with cameras rolling right in his face, were markedly callous, probably borderline psychotic, and made the situation much worse than it had to be), but why is nobody asking what happened to get to the point where Floyd had to have 4 guys subduing him in the street? That simply - and I mean it when I say "simply", because it really is that simple - does not happen to the average black person (i.e. a person who is not fucked-up on drugs and who is lawfully conducting themselves).

Why is it lost that the average black person does not typically act like Floyd?

Instead, everybody who is defending him wants to act like their lives are similar to his.

Are they? Really?

I highly doubt it in the majority of cases. If people suffer stigmatizing treatment, it is because of bad eggs like this guy fucking it up for good people.

So, where are the voices of that law-abiding majority whose reputations are tarnished by the miscreants? Why are they not offended to the bone that their reputations will be tarnished by those who care not for one second about such things?

When it's all said and done the guy didn't deserve to die. Unless he was a threat to the cop he shouldn't have died.

Nobody said that he deserved to die, but the autopsy did say that the chief cause of death was likely whatever chemical cocktail was in his system, and that no evidence existed that he died of asphyxiation or strangulation.

Those facts cannot be lost.

Shouldn't the murder charges be dropped then?

The lynch mob has already decided that he is guilty of heinous murder of the guy. The whole country is up in flames. Who cares about the rule of law now, right?

So you're saying that this guy is innocent? That's what you believe and the only reason he will be found guilty is because of politics?

No, I'm sure he is guilty of something, as he definitely could have shown better judgment. He likely could have taken his knee off at an earlier moment. However, even if he does that mitigating gesture, and the guy still died later, he would probably still have been set upon by the horde.

One thing is for sure: the word "Chauvinism" will mean something entirely different from now on.

Time to shoot the protesters. Nobody, and I mean nobody(outside of badrouge) is defending the Minnesota cops. The point has been made. Enough of this riot shit.

They defaced the fucking Lincoln Memorial. Churches are being burned, our history is being destroyed, I swear it is looking like fucking Venezuela on the TV. It is time for these local leaders to stop trying to blame others and stamp this shit out,if it was really a majority of outsiders wouldn't they be able to find them easy? check the fucking hotels, look for out of state plates. Total typical Dem , Not my fault B.S. . We had a chance a week ago to make some change, now it is all fucking wasted. Where are all the leaders of the B l a c k community on TV telling their brothers and sisters to out the agitators? Fucking cowards and hustlers all. The only one I saw so far who has tried to calm shit down and talk of peace is Floyds brother and then right after him some street thug took the megaphone from him and started spewing the usual hat shit.

Please stop.

C’mon Nas he has a point . Why aren’t these “ white agitators “ being beat the fuck down if and when they start this shit ? Whomever the community leaders are should be encouraging outing them if they truly are to blame .

They are. People are just ignoring them because the looting is better for television. Even here, I shared a video of a couple of 20 something white women tagging a building with "BLM", I don't think anyone saw it. The people on the scene complained about it.

People our age rarely shout anyone down. I drove past a lot of crimes in progress yesterday and didn't tell anyone to "cut it out", I think it's somewhat unfair to expect kids to do it. Until Saturday, there was so much positivity around most of the city and suburbs, but the idiots got the coverage.
