Not often when you can pull off the 7-10 split on the bike path.

I realize that "on your left" has become an accepted warning so that an unwitting pedestrian doesn't suddenly step into the cyclist's path, but that isn't really the way it's used. It's more of a threat, like "LOOK OUT, HERE I COME!" The paths in Chicago's parks aren't part of a Grand European Tour or a Velodrome. They're shared space for pedestrians, cyclists, idiots on rollerblades, and babies wandering aimlessly in circles. If you're on a bike it's your responsibility to be able to stop before you crash into someone. Screaming, "ON YOUR LEFT!!!!!" doesn't absolve you of said responsibility.

i regularly run on a bike path, and always hug the right side of the path as close as safely possible. i dont listen to music or podcast specifically so that i can hear bikers coming up from behind or other sounds that indicate someone is appraching. i don't need them to call out "on your left" but i appreciate it when they do. i would say about 50% of them call out. i think the bigger bike path douchebags are the runners/walkers with earbuds stuffed into their ears cranking the jams and have no idea of their surroundings and what is going on around them, running right down the middle of the path and act all startled when you pass them or come up on their shoulder. i also like the folks walking their "friendly" dogs who have no problem letting them run loose, or, if leashed, let them come over and get all up in my space. i dont know or care if your mutt is friendly and just wants to say hi, get it the fuck away from me.

Worse are the douchebags that pass without saying anything...all of a sudden they're just there. Sorry assholes, I'm teaching my son how to ride on the path and how to be courteous. A little courtesy in return would be appreciated. That and the side by side dicks that are coming at you from the opposite direction. One guy is basically straddling the middle line forcing oncoming bikes almost off the path, while holding a conversation with their buddy.

It depends on what time of year it is. In the summer I just wear shorts and gym shoes. I prefer to go shirtless if it's hot out. I'd also rather not wear a helmet and I usually don't on my normal route which has minimal dangers. I do put the helmet on if I'm going to be riding in heavy traffic or in icy conditions.

Savage.
just passed a shirtless guy about to board a plane at Midway and immediately thought of JORR. He was wearing bib overall shorts but no shirt :puker: Glad he wasn't on my flt.

Between the Dupage County Fair, Chuck E. Cheese's, and a local pig roast, I saw my share of savages this weekend.

See, I expect a civilized person to wear a shirt, shoes, and a sport coat on a plane, but when I'm walking among the pygmy goats at a fairgrounds I'm not offended by bib overalls and Rusty Wallace t-shirts. In fact, I expect them.

I don't expect to see their Sunday best at the County Fair, but I don't think it's too much to ask for them to keep their shirts and shoes on. I was at least wearing a golf shirt.

That makes the rollerblading slightly less gay.

I appreciate the patches of Lakefront that have a gravel path or worn dirt paths etched next to the asphalt routes. You're out of everyone's way and feels easier than pounding pavement.

I'm no business guru, but I would think you'd let Jordan play in jean shorts if he so desired.

I believe in most collisions between a cyclist and a pedestrian the guy on the bike suffers the worse injuries. You're really vulnerable on a bike. I'm always very cautious when I ride. I don't ever need to warn pedestrians because I never put myself in a position where I might run into one.

And riding in traffic is even worse. The guy in the car wants you to follow the rules of the road, but he refuses to accept you as a legitimate road vehicle. I'm not gonna tell you I don't blow through stop signs when no one is around, but if there are pedestrians or cars, I make my stop. And I don't want the other guy's right-of-way. I just want him to give me mine. If the car hits the stop first, I'd like him to just go instead of waiting for me and waving. But I understand that most cyclists probably just blow right in front of him.

Also, a woman was recently killed at Sacramento and Belmont when a truck turned right into her. http://chi.streetsblog.org/2016/07/01/p ... acramento/
I'm not sure who was at fault here, but I will say the rider wasn't being cautious for that to happen. I never ride up to the right of cars at a controlled intersection. You can't trust that a guy will have his signal on. You're just begging to be right hooked. And when I get there first and I'm going straight, of course a car isn't supposed to turn right around me. But the driver will flip his shit if a cyclist moves out into the middle so he can't make his right on red around the bike. So spare me the rules of the road bullshit.

The Laws of Physics don't support your argument as to who may suffer more in a bike/pedestrian collision. Taking into consideration that the cyclist has a moment's awareness of the potential crash, you can't tell me that a blindsided pedestrian suffers less from the collision.

The arbitrary adherence to the rules of the road is the problem that drivers have with cyclists. As a driver, I can't decide to just blow through a stop sign because I don't think there is traffic. Where you (JORR) may be that type of cyclist with enhanced traffic awareness, I (a driver) don't know if your enhanced awareness doesn't translate into you randomly wanting to follow the rules. I mean if you don't, why should I? So I won't trust you as a "vehicle" sharing the road.

As to you coming up on my right and preventing me from making a right on red, that is the type of shit cyclists pull too often. Or deciding that they're going to pass me on the left at the red light and then proceed in front of me with the left arrow.

The problem with too many DIVVY riders is that they don't adjust the bike properly for them to ride. Factor in the "let's go for a ride" couples who aren't familiar with the concept that you can't ride side-by-side without going out of the bike lane. One rider (usually male) thinks they're the better rider while the other rider struggles to keep the bike straight whenever they start off.

Oh god this. I have seen too many Divvy riders near my office downtown trying to ride their bike on the sidewalk packed with people going to and from work like a salmon swimming upstream against a current to spawn. The amount of people that can't handle simple things like sidewalks downtown are for pedestrians are staggering.

I'm not sure what law of physics you're citing. But I believe it is a fact that the cyclist usually takes the worst of it in a crash with a pedestrian. It probably has something to do with how high he is sitting.

Are you kidding me? Drivers blow through stop signs all the time. I almost got clipped by two of them this morning. The difference is, when I blow a stop sign chances are I'm not going to kill anyone.

No, in this instance drivers are more often ignorant of the rules of the road. When I'm at the light first you have no right to go right on red around me. You should treat me just as if I were a car going straight. Few motorists do.

I agree that the average dummy on a Divvy is dangerous.

Except that isn't the scenario he described.

75% of cyclists ignore 90% of the rules of the road.

I'm fairly sure drivers have at least slightly better statistics.

As soon as you lane split or blow a stop sign / redlight, I'm personally revoking your right to travel safely anywhere near my vehicle. Fair warning.

I think the laws of physics include the bicyclist moving at 3/4/5/etc. times the speed of the pedestrian.
