I bet some of these idiots are the same ones not wearing a sports jacket while on the interstate. Savages

Is 8-10 over a Catholic thing? Because that is right in my speed wheelhouse.

Every Catholic I know picks and chooses his own rules. It's like there's a separate religion for each person.

I'm still trying to get my head around this. This is actually the problem. Every asshole on the road thinks that whatever he is doing is the right thing. (Really, that's how it is in all facets of life, but you can see it clearly on the road.) The guy who is going the speed limit in the left lane is an asswipe. But the guy who wants to go 90 in the left lane is an asswipe too. I drive 10-15 over and I'm just right. It's like the fucking Three Bears!

I live in that 8-10 over zone. I think its reasonable. More than 10 over is excessive speeding and the courtesies of the road no longer apply to you.

Well, speed limits are actually normally set with the 85% rule and enforcement almost always takes this into account both at the police and court level. Speed limits are normally set so 85% of the standard drivers are at or below and 15% are above. If they were truly set by the top safe speed they would be much higher. In fact, this is why speed limits are actually raising in a lot of places.

It's pretty hard but not impossible to get a ticket for going less than 10-12% over the speed limit. A judge is also likely to throw it out of it does get that far if there is not another reason to keep it. It also is dependent on weather and time of day and congestion. This is also why the left lane is for passing is important. If someone wants to drive the speed limit we have a very solid mechanism to let them do so while others who want to drive at a safe speed that is over the limit can pass them and remove the safety hazard of two cars traveling at different speeds in the safest way possible.

I'm consistently 12-15 over, except in work zones and school zones. Got my first ticket in seven years, a few weeks ago. I was sweating it, because he pulled me over in a work zone. He had clocked me a few blocks before the work zone started, but didn't get behind me until then. Traffic safety school in December! Let me know if anyone here has questions I can ask the instructor.

That's fine (and truthfully that's about how I drive too), and it seems that that may be a consensus, but if it is, we should change the speed limits to reflect such. They're our speed limits. They weren't handed down by God. Otherwise, we as a society have agreed to the limits as they are and if some guy is driving the limit and I'm up his ass, I'm the asshole, not him.

I feel like people will go 8-10 over, even when the speed limit goes up. It's like I-55 going from 65 up to 70 a couple years ago. 85 seems to be the new 75. I take it fairly frequently to see my family.

JORR is right on with the problem being everyone applying their own moral compass for speeding. Things would be much simpler if it they made the limit 85 with zero tolerance. Regulate the left lane by setting aggressive minimums.

It will get worse once the robots starting taking the left lane and programmed not to speed.

when i was in Europe earlier this summer, we had a rental car and it had some thing on it where if you went like 5 over the limit, you'd hear a beep....shit was funny as hell, every few seconds you'd hear this beep go off

Most states enforce their speed limits within reason. You would think that a state with no money would take the easy money from people driving 30 over......but no.

Most states don't enforce speed limits on the interstate. Also, going 80-90 mph isn't more dangerous than going 55 mph in the left lane. If you're keeping up with the flow of traffic you're fine. If you're going 20 mph slower than everyone around you then you're the one cresting s dangerous situation.

Look, like I said in the OP, this isn't a hard concept to understand. If you want to drive slow, don't get in the left lane. It's not for that. That's it.

Theoretically we would have much higher speed limits with self driving cars. Humans being idiots are the reason they are as low as they are now.

This is even more true with the advanced safety features(sorry Darkside but cars will get even safer) that self driving cars can offer.

Yep. Out of all the things in the world that piss me off, this takes the cake. My wife acts like I'm a slow driver because I give the car in front of me room. When she drives, I ask her if she could stop in time if the car in front of her slammed its brakes. She doesn't understand that that's the law (and should be common sense). It amazes me how people are so fucking slow in all facets of life except when they drive... then it's imperative to ride people's asses even though it doesn't get you anywhere faster.

If someone's on your ass, its probably because you are driving too slow in the left lane..that's the only way to get these dumb bastards out of the left lane.

I take a combination of 55, the Dan Ryan, the Bishop Ford, and 294 to and from work. If you're only going 8-10 over in the left lane you're in the wrong lane. If you're not passing you should be going at least 70 in the left lane, 8-10 over is for the middle lane, and the right lane is for the speed limit. The 4 lane parts of 294 just spreads it out a bit, but anyone not going 70 in the left lane need to gtfo.

I was driving home from Phish at Red Rocks in 1996, and I got pulled over in Nebraska for going 88 in a 75. An airplane timed me between the marks on the highway, which were 1/8 mile apart.

Maybe I've just gotten lucky. I've driven a decent amount around the country and never been pulled over and I never go less than 70-75 on the interstate.

Just because you haven't been pulled over, doesn't mean cops aren't patrolling the interstates in those states.

Of course. I just don't notice many and I'm looking out for them.

I'm 90% sure Missouri doesn't have police. I've driven through that state like a dozen times and most of the time went 90+ and never seen any.

75 is acceptable in the State Police eyes, there's way more dough in pulling trucks over, the fines are in the thousands..anything over 80 and you could get stopped but it's doubtful that a cop is stopping someone for driving under 80.

well, i'm sure they're also targeting people by running their plates...and if they see anything based on that, then i'm sure youll get pulled over for going 75 in a 70, for example ....
