I guess things went ok. The doctor cancelled my follow up this week as I guess things didn’t rupture as he expected. Everything tore off the bone instead tearing mid tendon.

Have a screw and anchor into my heal now and that takes a few extra weeks.

Got my first real taste of oxy.... took it long enough to realize I enjoy shitting more than pain killers.

Overall it’s not painful now. Just waiting to when I can begin recovery and pt. My wife ruptured her acl last October and now with this, our house has a gimp nonstop. This kinda blows.

No oxy, but they gave me Hyrocodone....I lasted 1 day on it and came the same realization. All it did was give me 2 hr crash nap and then I'd still wake up. Funny thing, my surgically reconstructed ACL pain was manageable....every other muscle on my body from being "awakened" by using crutches was more pain. The Hydro did NOTHING for that.
Painkillers are stupid.

They were good for sleeping the first night when popping them every 2 or 3 hours. But I wouldn’t call it enjoyable.

Maybe that will be better in the long run- no weakened repair of the tendon itself, more of a bone growth thing. Don't take that for gospel, I'm not an orthopedic surgeon, I just play one on my podcast. I don't use the snooty title of "Doctor" like some frauds. Noisewater, indeed.

After the first day post-op I avoided any of the hydro or oxytocin stuff, in doses large enough to help I was having hallucinations, or at least, really f'ed up dreams.

Sounds like you'll be in the walking boot by October, able to drive and stand on your own, and nearly whole by Christmas. I hope it all goes well for you from here on out.

So I was going down the stairs in my biking cleats like I have every damn day when it's been below 40 degrees for the last three years and my left foot slipped on the landing between the fifth and sixth floors and I immediately knew something really bad had happened. I've never felt anything like it in my life. The best I can describe it is that it was like my leg was on sideways. My first inclination was to yell, "ICE. ACL. HOSPITAL." but no one was in the stairwell to hear it.

I tried to stand and for a few seconds it seemed a little better. I think maybe my kneecap had displaced and snapped back. I don't know for sure. But I was able to get on my feet on pure adrenaline and I actually hobbled up the stairs to the sixth floor and got on the elevator. I rode up to my floor and was gingerly making my way down the long hallway to my apartment when my leg just collapsed and I fell down like a bowling pin. To add insult to injury the fat guy who is jealous of my cycling regimen came out of one of the elevators as I was lying on my face and said, "Hey, how are things going down there?"

I was on the phone to my wife telling her I was hurt really bad and needed help. I'm sure she may have thought I had had a heart attack. I was actually only about 100 feet from the door to our apartment. I was able to get back up and slowly shuffle down the hall to my couch.

Getting in the car to go to the immediate care facility of Illinois Bone & Joint was an adventure in itself. They took a bunch of x-rays but I knew no bones were broken. They gave me a brace and crutches and told me to get an MRI as soon as possible and then come back. The doctor said I had torn the tendon from my quad off the knee and seemed pretty convinced I was going to need surgery.

I have to say, after lying prone all night it seems a lot better, but what the hell do I know. Probably just wishful thinking that I might be able to avoid surgery. I guess I'll know soon enough.

Best of luck with your recovery JORR. That sounds pretty rough.

Some doctors answer to any ailment is surgery.

Maybe it's the PCL, which might not require surgery. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your injury, JORR. My father-in-law tore the same tendon you did (and maybe some others) in both knees about a decade ago. As a result, he had to wear some kind of crazy knee-to-hip cast for a couple months and needed assistance wiping his ass during that time as well. Be glad you only hurt one knee!

I actually hobbled my way to a Super Bowl party yesterday and one of the women there was a nurse at a rehab facility and she described a teacher they had treated who had slipped on a rug at the school where she worked and had the exact same injury as your father-in-law and had to be put in a giant double cast.

Sorry to hear; best wishes for a speedy and full recovery.

I don't know how I missed this thread; I had surgery for ruptured Achilles in March 2020, right as they were shutting everything down so it got moved to Wisconsin from Illinois. The first night the pain was brutal but a day or two later I was able to toss the painkillers. August 31 2020 I got the ok to resume running.

Terrific doc at Illinois Bone and Joint in Libertyville.

MRI will make it clear whether or not you need surgery.
The pain you described sounds like how I felt when i shredded my ACL. After 5-10 minutes of horrible pain, it calmed enough to limp around. Still.....if a ligament is shredded or torn, it won't heal by itself and since it's weakened, you could potentially make things a lot worse and painful.

Good luck....it sucks, but if you take the Physical Therapy seriously you'll recover even stronger.

Thanks. I'm resigned that surgery is inevitable.

One weird thing though. I wouldn't say I was ever in any real bad pain. It's hard for me to describe because I've never felt anything like it before, but I guess the closest I can come is that it was sort of like that feeling when you whack your funny bone, but throughout my entire leg. Like a vibration or something. It almost seemed like my leg was paralyzed for a minute. And now instead of pain, I think the best way to describe it is that my leg feels "fatigued." Of course, I'm sure I could make it hurt like hell if I tried to bend it a certain way. Not gonna try that though!

If Dave Grohl can finish a set with a broken leg while sitting on a stool, you can do your thing as well!

your mention of the xrays reminds me a lot of what happened to my brother this past summer when he snapped his arm while we were playing catch. I heard the damn thing go from about 100 ft away and initially thought he had snapped a tendon or something, but he kept saying it felt like his arm was floating free. So, we get to the hospital and they take him back for xrays and all the questions theyre asking him and first xray seemed to think they believed it was muscle or tendon related even with him telling them that he thought something broke.

First set of xrays come back and theyre all happy because they dont see any bone breaks. Yay!

My brother was not having it, and told them the xray wasnt even of the area hes having the pain and sensation, so, they take another one. He said it was excruciating because he had to hold his arm at an angle that was basically forcing the bone outward even further.

Sure enough, those come back and now reveals a spiral fracture of his upper arm.

They were ready to send him home with his arm in a sling.

Most definitely. Hopefully you can get by cortisone and rehabilitation.

The MRI will tell it all. If you can put pressure on it then now it might not be as bad as it appears.

JORR you could always get out there with one of those hand cycles. I fear for your mental health if you aren't able to get out there and yell at people and be competitive. Unfortunately with that type of bike you would be really low to the ground and extremely hard to see.

The MRI will tell it all. If you can put pressure on it then now it might not be as bad as it appears.

Soonest I could get an MRI appointment was 4:00 tomorrow. Then I have a follow up with the doctor on Friday.

Good luck with this. Hopefully you're down and out for too long.

Looks like reading is a young man's game.

So he wears his biking cleats for fun?
