True, but I think the lady should have had a better sense of setting. What she did was fine if you're at the zoo or a restaurant or the mall. At a hospital though? Nah, not appropriate.

Does your opinion change knowing that she was holding her pet goat on her way up to see the people doctor when she engaged Cory?

But why does she give a flying fuck or feel the need to inquire about CORY's child? Ask about the god damn weather. Say hospital food sucks. Ask the kid if he's excited for Christmas.

When a person on the street says good morning to me I clench up a little and think I am trying to be scammed. I don't think it is the same everywhere.

   Me too. I try not to look anyone in the face. The same goes for people giving out flyers or trying to get me to switch to Verizon or something.

We need to be less insular as a culture. I applaud this woman.

Sheesh...do you guys run past Girls Scout Cookie sellers and Salvation Army bell-ringers too?

I just don't get it. The whole conversation is completely meaningless. Yes, the shopping bags I have in my hand are because I went shopping, and yes, shopping went well, and yes, there are a lot of people shopping today. Oh yeah, it's cold out too, but at least it's not snowing. I'm glad I could enrich your day so much on the 30 second elevator ride.

Okay, now your post definitely has an air of superiority about it RFDC. Not trying to start anything, but that's honestly how it comes across.

They are country folk. She was trying to be nice.

I hear ya. But it's safer to just say "cute kid" or something like that.

How about if we all just shut the fuck up on elevators?

I don't think I'm above talking to anyone. I just don't need to have a superficial 30 second conversation about pointless stuff because we both happened to want to move vertically at the same time.

That's not even remotely similar.

I think me saying flush the toilet or don't spit in the sink (common sense stuff) is more reasonable than saying, "Don't talk to me in public ever."

I think they said "Don't talk to me in an elevator ever, unless I am drunk." A bit different.

I don't like small talk from strangers, you don't like people spitting in the sink. We all have our little idiosyncrasies.

I would also say that I don't think what I said means don't ever talk to me in public. I don't mind a friendly greeting on the sidewalk. But there are certain places I just do not want small talk. Standing at the urinal I don't need to hear how cold the water is. Standing in an elevator I don't need to be told how windy it is outside. I just want to do my business and be left alone.

Even though I nominated the woman, I'm kinda with IMU on this...I found it to be DB worthy not the opening line of questioning but when it was clear (like after first question when she looked at my wife who had tears welled up in her eyes). I'm sure she felt bad afterward and probably thought to herself, "I'm such a douchebag." or something like that, which is why I thought it was nomination worthy. Hell, I bet after the first line, her mind was probably going "shut up, shut up, shut up!" but her mouth just couldn't quit. Especially because she was situationally aware...she got on the elevator on floor 6, we were coming down from floor 7 which is titled on the wall as "Pediatric oncology."
Hell, I know if I had done what she did that, I'd probably think I'm a douchebag.
