The dude is 87 years old. He's simply too young for WGN's target demographic.

Let's not overly romanticize the show. He regularly had topics that instantly brought a turn of the dial.

I don't understand how an interim GM can fire the host for most successful show they have going.

Then, the Tribune comes out yesterday with the story that Rosenberg is retiring.

That whole organization is in shambles. It's really a shame that an institution of Chicago radio is now just a pile of rubble.

Every show does. But, at least he could make a show that you didn't think you'd be interested in...be interesting.

Then, of course, he'd occasionally have a clunker of a guest that was unable to convey a thought without sounding like a pompous ass.

I think it's interesting to think about how Milt could so adeptly handle callers who were idiots without derailing the show and compare that to B&B who allow the show to come screeching to a halt.

Laurence should have a funeral for Dr. Milt in front of Tribune Tower Thursday.

If you don't like his show than you probably don't like intelligent radio. The guy has been on the air for almost 40 years with some of the brightest minds in the country. How many of these current radio hosts in Chicago will be on in 10 or 20 years? He is one of the few hosts who actually lets the callers talk without interrupting them or hanging up on them. The intellectual level of the show far outweighs any other program in the Chicago media market. The only thing that is remotely close is Chicago Tonight on channel 11.

Well, no, but that's just the nature of the show. There are going to be shows you have to listen to, shows you didn't think you'd listen to but end up listening to, and shows that are of no interest whatsoever. It's like a bag of Halloween candy. The show on 1800s French opera is the Almond Joy.

I'm not a big fan of Rick Kogan and was very disappointed when he replaced Steve Edwards on The Afternoon Shift on WBEZ. Actually, I suppose I'm more disappointed that Edwards left in the first place and hope Kogan is not the permanent replacement.

It's two shifts of two hours; they're trying yet another iteration of the Noon Show. McConnell was Randy Michaels's big hire, sucks in the ratings, and yet they're giving him more time? and human essence of all things WGN John Williams is leaving? Man, I don't get it.

I don't get it either, expanding WGN Radio's lowest rated show in Mike McConnell's.

For starters, John Williams had been splitting time at 2 stations, kinda like Tom Joyner used to do constantly jetting from Chicago to Dallas and vice versa back in the day. In John's case, he was splitting time between Minneapolis' WCCO-AM & 720 WGN Radio. He recently decided to cutback on his WGN duties and decided to devote full time to WCCO in Minneapolis.

I think the real reason why Williams & now Milt Rosenberg are on their way out at WGN Radio has to do with parent company Tribune Broadcasting about ready to emerge from bankruptcy. Truth be told, I'm a little surprised Rosenberg was able to stay at the top of his profession as long as he did in an era of so many radio companies being gobbled up, format changes left & right, etc.

I find Kogan a little inconsistent. But his knowledge of Chicago politics and culture is formidable. He's done some great shows on Chicago writers in the past (at WGN) and his recent discussion of the significance of Harold Washington's tenure as mayor (on BEZ) was well-informed if somewhat limited politically.

The only gripe I have with Kogan is that sometimes he pushes himself a little too hard as being the continuation of Studs Terkel. Just let your work speak for itself.

This has slipped into WGNFMB.

I didn't know relatively young people listened to this much WGN.

Hey, I'd stick around after Cubs games.

I think Caring Deeply About WGN is kind of part and parcel of any interest or participation in the Chicago radio market. It's our flagship. Sure, I may not care about Max Armstrong's hog futures, but I know how much others do.

Milt - Now, what do you make of that...

Milt - I see. What do you get from the tone of what is being said? Here again, Paula Cooper...

I wonder if they'll be taking requests.

Tonight's penultimate program is with Professor David Dennis of Loyola, author of the new book, "Inhumanities: Nazi Interpretations of Western Culture."

So he will be studying good dolphin's posts extensively?

Well, guess that's that. Pretty low-key goodbye.

For people who want similar programs, Wisconsin Public Radio produces two that I really like, To the Best of Our Knowledge and University of the Air. Both worth checking out and cherry-picking. I sure will miss Extension 720, though.

Like many here, I grew up in a home that had the kitchen radio tuned to WGN all day long. Wally Phillips, Roy Leonard, Bob Collins, Sports Central, & Cubs Baseball were all part of everyday life. Now, the only show worth a damn on WGN is Garry Meier. Johnny B & Mike McConnell are both failures. Its a real shame to see what has become of WGN Radio.
